67 ignition switch question
Hey all Newbie alert
Been several months since I've popped the hood on my 67 due to a myriad of family health issues. Tried to get the ol gal started today. Got the distributor in and got it to fire by using a Screwdriver to jump the solenoid. I replaced the ignition switch previously but now it doesn't work. So any thoughts on troubleshooting the switch? I'm electrically challenged but do own a volt meter but admittedly have never used it. How can I tell if juice is getting in and out of the switch? First recheck your wiring job, then check for voltage at the small post on the coil when the key is in the run position if that checks out then you need to check the post on the starter "S" terminal when someone else turns the key to start.

If you just replaced the Ign Switch, you should check your splices or connections for opens where the old wiring splices into the new pigtail leads.
Sometimes when you tape it back up a cold-solder joint can open. HEY MODS: CAN WE MOVE THIS TO ELECTRICAL? THANKS.

Also check the 12 gauge wire that goes from the positive battery post to the junction block on the inside edge of the passengers fender. Take it off and clean the wire ends. LockDoc

thanks guys...i have voltage at the coil but none at the battery...so i'll doublecheck my wiring job at the switch.
i suppose i can check for voltage where the purple wire comes out of the switch to see if it exists, then check past the wire connector on same?? |

VICTORY! LockDoc wrote something that I didn't catch on his post. " check the 12 guage wire from the positive side to the junction block". It didn't hit me until the drive home today that the wire was on the negative side. Ran home an boom , she's alive. Carb had issues I think.. It wants to run about 5k rpm when it starts. I'll search for a thread for initial carb settings now.

we got everything bolted on the carb right side up, replaced a bad fuel inlet and adjusted the carb as best i could... the ol' gal actually started up and after tweaking the timing just a bit, purred like a kitten. So cool.... actually drove it around my field (no brakes yet) and went through 3 gears... i cant believe its actually running. 1987 was the last time it was licensed ...been sitting outside in a field ever since. Radiator leaks like a sieve, no brakes and my gas tank is a 16 oz gatorade bottle, but she drove....i'm telling ya she drove! what a great evening...
