ABS comes on at every stop

This is my first post on this forum.I am usually on the 73-87 side. I have a 98 K3500 SRW. 7.4 with a 4L80e. My question is after setting for about a year,it failed emissions test, finally made repairs and ready to get it retested. On the road test the brake pedal felt normal however the ABS motor came on each time the truck was slowing to a stop. Plugged in Solus tool. It showed an abs stop every time. These were not hard braking stops, just moving in the driveway it would come on. Want some ideas before I spend more money on this thing. Truck only has 85K miles as I only use it to haul stuff to the dump and pull my boat. Thanks in advance.

With the solus scanner you should be able to monitor wheel speed. Look for a speed sensor going to zero before the others. I am willing to bet you have rust particles stuck on your front speed sensors. The rust particles fell from your rotors as they sat for a while, the sensors attract metal. Clean them and retry.

Re: ABS comes on at every stop

Looked at wheel speed. It measures LF , RF and rear. They all seemed to be reading the same. I don't have a lot of experience with the Solus tool. With the truck not moving it read 3mph on all sensors. Not sure if this is correct. You are correct about rust on this truck, I plowed with it for a few years. I will pull the front wheels this weekend. Where is the rear sensor located since it only shows rear wheel speed and doesn't differentiate between left and right. Does it just use the VSS in the trans. ? Thanks for the help.

Rear sensor is most likely in the rear axle, mounted on the top of housing inline with ring gear. You will need to drive the truck and have someone watch the speed readings. Some vehicles will show 3 mph while sitting.still, not an issue.

Re: ABS comes on at every stop

Looking at wire diagram for your truck, rear wheel speed uses the sensor mounted on tail shaft housing on transfer case. That sensor is usually reliable. If it is giving problems your speedometer will not act right as it shares the signal with that.

After looking at some info on your truck, your front sensors are not exposed to rust like I was thinking. Front wheel speed sensors are mounted on the hub bearing assemblys. You now will have to find the readings for wheel speed sensor with scan tool and have someone drive it while you monitor the readings, look for speed sensor dropping faster than the others.

Re: ABS comes on at every stop

Another thing to note. If your wheel cylinders are leaking or your rear brake lines have air in them it will do the same thing. Mine did it after sitting for a few months in my garage. I pulled the drums and the wheel cylinders were leaking. Replaced the cylinders and some hardware as mine was rusty too. Now it works fine again.

You can clean the sensors and the the rest of the parts. Check those the rings on the drums if they get too rusty it won't work right but I would be looking at a mechanical failure first.

Go over the basics first. Also if you have a speed sensor problem or a abs problem the abs and red "brake" light would stay lit in most cases.

Re: ABS comes on at every stop

Would pulling the ABS fuse/relay disable the system. That way I could feel how the truck stops without it. I have in the past replaced both front calipers and pads but never pulled the rear drums off to check shoes and drums. Might be time to do a little general maintenance.
