Re: my streeing is off

Might want to check the frame around the steering box for cracks. Sounds like it should be parked until you figure it out.Try getting someone to turn the wheel while checking all suspension components.

Re: my streeing is off

Yeah that does sound like it broke the frame right around the steering box my Uncle had a blazer do this same thing but he kept driving it that way and eventually the frame just split.

Nahh, it's fixable. If there is a crack in the webbing of the frame, just get a competent welder to grind it out and weld it. If it is done right, it won't compromise the integrity of the frame. You could also cut a 1/4" piece of plate and bolt it to the inside of the frame. Just make sure to use 1/2" or 5/8" grade 8 bolts, with about a 1/2" shoulder.

If your steering wheel went 90 degrees off, you have a real problem. You just haven't found it yet. Something is broken. Not worn, broken. If the box has somehow failed internally to cause this, you have steel and iron parts that are damaged. Leaks don't mean anything to this deal.

Re: my streeing is off

Have u changed the fluid in the power steering pump? That will tell u If the internals are shot on the box, u will need to unhook it and dump the fluid out. See if there are any metal shards. I was having issues with mine too and buy doing this I found out my box shredded some stuff.

Re: my streeing is off

Get under it and eyeball things. As mentioned, you'll probably notice something out of place.

Any funny feeling when driving and turning the wheel?

I bought a Camaro a while back and when turning found it liked to steer itself more into the turn on say cloverleaf exchanges. A rebuilt box took care of that problem.

Note that some suggest new hoses and a rebuilt pump when replacing the box. Apparently due to metal shavings in the fluid.

I've heard the same suggestion for auto transmissions. My Jeep had metalflakes in the fluid after my friend roasted the TH400 as payback years ago. So it may be a good idea to view it as a system.

I'd guess $200 for all parts. Ask for a 72 box. The later boxes had a better ratio if I remember correctly.

If the PS pumps don't match, you can buy a bare pump. The pumps are almost all the same. The cans (tanks) vary.

Re: my streeing is off

Check your connecting link assembly especially the adjusting clamps. Shortening/lengthening that link by only one turn of either clamp will move your steering wheel more than 90 degrees of center. It is really touchy.

BTW - that is how to re-align your steering wheel when you find the problem. It moves both wheels at once - no fooling around with tie-rod ends.

Re: my streeing is off

ok so it was a few lose nuts but not behind the wheel. who ever replaced the rear tie rods that have the adjuster for the wheel thought it best not to even think of tighting them. so it is alot better now. but i find that the steering still sucks balls in this truck as she dont turn at all
