need help with parking brake 1977 k20
Hello all this is my first post on the site and its a big one. i recently acquired my stepdads 1977 chevy K20 its a 350 4 speed lifted 4 inches i believe. i have a big problem though, there is no parking brake anywhere.
i cant find any linkage any mounting hardware nothing, well normally you would say go ask your stepdad what he did with all of it (newer restoration) well the problem is he passed away a few years ago before he could fully finish the truck. so my question is, is there a package i can buy from anywhere that would give me every part i need to put the parking brake back in it? so far i've only found a few parts listed online and i know there has to be so many little parts that i wouldnt be able to find on my own. |

My vote would be to hit the junkyard and strip a complete system off an existing vehicle. That way you could see how it goes together and could be assured that you have everything.
Milton is near Janesville, right? Gotta be a bunch of squarebodies in the junkyards there, so near the assembly plant. K PS - I don't have the park brake system on my Chevelle, either.

Re: need help with parking brake 1977 k20
i think 79 and later have a switch for the light to show when the brake is left on
Ebrakes here are checked bigtime during any kind of road side safety blitz, money fine $$ if inopertive, and or towed if removed was told long time ago Ebrake is one of those things to "lube it,use it,or you lose it" rusting here

Keith is right it'd be easier to pull it all at once. Take a camera and take pic's before you tear it off the vehicle.

Yup, junkyard is your best bet. you can get the cables new from NAPA I think, but the little brackets and hardware is harder to find. Make sure you pull from a 83 or older truck that is the same wheelbase as your truck if your going to use everything from the parts truck. Check out LMCs catalog they have a pretty good diagram of the complete system.

If it's the same as a c30 i can take pic's off my dually. It's complete from cab to axle.

Re: need help with parking brake 1977 k20
Sorry ive been super busy with classes and work so i havent had a chance to get on,
motornut- my thoughts exactly i was lucky enough to know my mechanic well when he inspected it and he let me slide by without having one but said i need to put on in asap it wouldn't bother me as much if i could park on anything more than maybe a 15 degree incline but just leaving it in gear while its off wont hold it. Keith sorry i never put my state down, i'm in Milton NY i could start calling around and see if anyone has a k20 on their lot. ive seen some rear disk brake retro fits, whats everyones opinions on those? and how well is their "integrated" parking brake i thought i read that it was just hydraulic brake, just like pressing down the pedal and not as reliable as a drum brake? im basically looking for the right way to do things ill drive it around for the summer here and there and sometimes in the fall but come winter shes cooped up in the barn so i can tear it apart for a couple months and do it right |

Re: need help with parking brake 1977 k20
Harney, I would put all new cables on. They re cheap enough. Also why buy cables that may be starting to stick? But by all means, hit the junkyards to pick up those odd pieces that you will need to finish. And take pics. Rockauto is a good place for parts.

Re: need help with parking brake 1977 k20
oh yeah the plan is to get as many new parts as possible i just dont know where to get every part. so ripping out an entire system and then buying replacement parts sounds like simplest way
