Got a 1971 GMC 3500 Dually with a 350cid, 4 speed granny 1st.

Was just looking at the engine the other day and happened to think to look at the engine # boss to record the numbers. Got the boss clean and low and behold NO NUMBERS!

Doesn't look to have been altered at all, just looks like no numbers have ever been stamped. Anyone ever run into this?

Where are you looking? The #'s are cast in front of the bell housing on LH side. Check this site for more info

Looking at the number boss that sticks out just below the right head. It's about 1" wide x 2" long with a machined surface on the top.

Looking at that site posted, it's the 4th position labeled as the ENGINE ASSEMBLY DATE/SUFFIX CODE and partial VIN code.

I'm not sure that every application had numbers stamped there. I believe that some did and some did not.

My block numbers were casted into the block and they were on the driver side. You may have grab a can of brake cleaner and a wire brush to see them....

Mine does not have anything stamped there (in front of head) either. Suppose to be a early 70s 350.

Like hutch said. If the numbers are missing, good chance it has been decked. Not such a bad thing, means it has at least been gone through. Sometimes the machinist might put there own mark or serial number there also. The width of the pad is also a good quick indicator whether it is an early block or not. A pad for a '71 should be about 3" long and not rectangular where a later block has a smaller pad and is cast square.

Could be a crate motor. Check the # behind driver side head to see what year this block was used.
