64 c10 bare rear end.

I just picked up a 64 fleetside shortbed project. The rear end housing has been sandblasted and painted by the PO. It is just the bare housing, No internals. What would I have to do to get 5X4 and 3/4 Bolt pattern axles with say a 3.73 posi center section? Can I go to the local junkyard and pull the axles and center section out of something with a 12 bolt the same width? Order something aftermarket? Are all 12 bolt housings the same? All 12 bolt centers the same? Where would I measure from to get an idea of what I need to look for at the junk yard?

Thanks
David

Basically to simplify. Can I go get a 12 bolt the same width and bolt the whole unit in? Would it be cheaper to pull the internals and put them in my housing?

Re: 64 c10 bare rear end.

All the truck 12 bolt internals will be the same. As for the axles you will not find what you are looking for in a wrecking yard. You will have to have a set of axles made for your housing. If that is an original '63 to early '70 12 bolt truck housing, it should be about 57" +/- backing plate flange to backing plate flange. The late '70 to '82 12 bolt housings will be 1.5" wider. I do know that Moser can make the axles you want. Then you will have to figure out the brakes. I will possibly have a rear disc brake bracket set in a week or so, that will work with what you are doing.

Re: 64 c10 bare rear end.

I know I can get custom axels made and buy a new center section, but don't want to spend that kind of money. If I found the right one, I could buy a complete rear end from the junk yard for less then what a new center section from moser would be.

Re: 64 c10 bare rear end.

Buy a complete later 5x5 rear and redrill the axles/drums for the 5x4.75 pattern.

Re: 64 c10 bare rear end.

What year later rears fit? Does anything else have to be done besides just redrilling the axles and drums?
