What M/T parts/linkages need changed when going from an in-line 6 to a V8?

I pulled the 6 from my 67 and bolted in a small block at the V8 location using V8 mounts. Looking at the engine bay, it looks like I will be better off using the 6 cyl mounting position.

I would like to re-use as many of the 6 cylinder components as possible and keep the three on the tree.

Is the Z bar the only component that needs changed when going from a 6 to a 8? If I move to the 6 cyl position do I use the V8 or 6 cyl frame mounts?

Thanks,

Wes

You can mount a V8 in the 6 position, but it makes running an HEI distributor almost impossible to run with beating in the firewall.

My 283 is set up on the I6 mounts.
You will find it cramped for the distributor, rear plugs etc.
You will need an extension to mount the fan to the fan pulley since it sits back so far from the rad. The rad shroud may or may not work.
I had issues with the 4-speed shifter linkages hitting the e-brake cable stuff. Some clearance issues as well. The big advantage is that you don't have to change your driveline.
You will need all new bracketry for alternator and any other accessories. Carb set up will be different (linkage to gas pedal and choke etc).

Still worth doing but if I could do it again, I would put it on the V8 mounts just to have the room.

Re: What M/T parts/linkages need changed when going from an in-line 6 to a V8?

I used the I6 stands and the I6 position for my 305 i'm running stock GM hei had to give the firewall a few love taps can't really tell unless the distributor is out. if your running standard I think you'll need the ball that screw's into the block and I don't remember if I used same clutch linkage or if I robbed the one out of my stock v8 parts truck.

Re: What M/T parts/linkages need changed when going from an in-line 6 to a V8?

Thanks for all the replies.

If I used the 6 cyl position, I would stick with a points distributor. I really don't want the fire wall clearance hassle. Hate to think about pulling the cap on the side of the road to replace a module.

Any idea if the Z bar or bracket that bolts to the block is different?

I've gotten over 200,000 miles on mine most of them weren't very kind miles on the lovely back roads of Montana with no issues ever. bought a used distributor put new cap/rotor/coil on it and it's never been changed since(probably should do that someday)
