Question Cylinder head repair ?

So at work I had to pull the driver side head to attempt to remove a broken exhaust manifold bolt... The bolt at the very rear of the head.. #7 cyl. So I get the head out and try to get the broken bolt out using Snap on screw extractors...No luck. I didn't take an after pic but its not pretty. The drill bit went kinda sideways. My question is : How big a helicoil can I put in to finish this without damaging the head or hitting water jackets ?

Re: Cylinder head repair ?

I cannot answer your ? But will ask you 1....the 8 mm bolt is basically 5/16 ", is there enough material that can you drill & tap to 3/8 "? Just a thought, you might peel less material that way....Longhorn

Talking Re: Cylinder head repair ?

Well good news ! I was able to helicoil the head and use the GM 8mmx1.25bolts for the exhaust manifold. I tried tapping new threads before that but my hole was too buggered up. My cell phone pics are crappy but I got her all back together and drove her for a while, no exhaust leak engine didn't blow up or overheat so I guess it was a good day
