Hmmm... that seems a bit excessive

My engine swap is coming along nicely. I dropped by this evening after work and they've got the new engine in... and more.

I was a bit surprised to see that they had removed the intake from the new engine! I asked him what was going on and he said, "Well, the carb linkage was different and since your old carb has the heat riser on the manifold, we had to swap it over!"

Ummm... okay. Normally, I just rig the linkage, but I guess this is acceptable. Sure, I would've liked the electric choke, but the manifolds are roughly equivalent. Besides, I just had the original carb rebuilt.

The guy grumbled on about how in order to use my original pulleys, they had to install a new water pump (mine was leaking) and how the whole job was taking longer than they thought it would. I mean, I'm glad they're getting it right, but what did they expect?

So tomorrow they should have it all hooked back up and then it's time for the exhaust. I've told the guy that I want 2-1/2 inch exhaust and that I'll supply the mufflers (I don't want the $10 specials from the barrel next to the register). He hesitated and said, "That won't bolt up to the exhaust manifold. I don't know if we can do that."

Naturally, I think the guy knows better (or at least I hope so). I explained that 2-inch from the manifold converted up to 2-1/2 as soon as possible would be fine. I'm still not confident he "gets" it. I mean, 2-1/2 can't be much more than 2-inch, right?

Needless to say, I'm a little on edge. Somehow I get the feeling he's going to come back with a higher price and/or I'm going to pick up the truck only to find 2-inch exhaust under it. It's just a gut feeling, but you know how that goes.

Anyway, wish me luck!

Oooh... creepy!

Yeah, I've really don't have any good reason to expect this whole thing will turn sour. I mean, the owner (the guy that I set the price with) hasn't come out and said, "That will cost more!" All I've got to go on is what I'm seeing and some casual conversations with his helper. On the same note, it's not that I want to screw the guy. Hey, if it needs a part, it needs a part and I can accept that. However, if the price is going to be higher then I darn sure want to know before he proceeds. I'm just going to have to make sure we're seeing eye-to-eye on the exhaust.

There are no Meineke shops up here and Midas wants... wait for it... $500 for a pair of 2-1/2 inch duals with their "Farting Eagle Ultra Performance Turbo Hi-Flo Mega Super Tone" jobs. Like it or not, this guy is the best deal going.
