Exclamation please help if you can

Ok so I bought a truck last summer it was a 1986 but a tree had fallen on the cab so the owner replaced the cab with one from a 1981 no big deal right ? The vin is on the cab so to get it registered I used the number in the cab no problem. Before I could drive this truck I had to replace the motor and trans so these three things I'm clear on motor and trans vins are clean and the cab vin is clean because I got a tag under it I was pulled over by the cops when looking at the truck they first thought was that it was stolen I just got it running good haven't painted it or anything so even doe the hold truck is black you can tell things not the same easy. Now they have been holding my truck for over a week trying to find out something is wrong with it anyone got any advise as to what I should do

Number's on motor and transmission shouldn't mean anything. Anyone can swap motor's and it's no problem. I did mine 3 times with 3 different 350's no boy's said anythin, Or could be someone had stolen that motor or transmission or cab and found out you bought it and are tryin to figure it out. I'd go down talk to em. See what needs done to get it back.

THe vin for the original cab is also found on the frame and on the bottom of the rad support. Your vin's don't match is the problem.

Contact the PO, see if you can get any pics of damaged cab, documents on purchase of '81 cab, insurance claim forms.

Try your state DMV, tax assessor, etc. web site for info on whether you need a title, and/or how to make the state believe you legally own the truck.

Yup, its a pain...

Have a cop run the vin on the dash see if its clean first. After that talk to the dmv tell them everything they will take care of you.But some cops are lazy a friend of mine bought a car no title he tagged it as he old car that looked like it.This car had been impounded twice but years later the owner of the car came up to him it was stolen lol.No cop ever ran the dash vin on it or would have been taken right then and there.
