short bed or long?

I just looked at a truck with the spid stating 127 wheel base. It is a 396 engine 71 chevy short step side, I looked under and didn't see signs of welding. How else can I tell?

Re: short bed or long?

Could have just been a frame swap. I've got a longbed truck that has a bad frame under it and I'll be using a short bed frame to rebuild the truck. So other that the serial number on the frame, I don't know if there's a way to tell.

Re: short bed or long?

you could always cut it and streach it to make a longbed

Re: short bed or long?

Its registered as a 71, so your saying that they could have put a cab from a long bed onto the short bed frame?

Re: short bed or long?

Does the serial number on the glove box sticker match the title... or appear to be a 71? Yeah, swapping frames is common.

Re: short bed or long?

I didn't check the numbers, does that bring the value of the truck down by putting long bed cab on? It has ac and tilt, power steering too

Re: short bed or long?

If the truck isn't stone stock (which it doesn't sound like), it shouldn't effect resale much. I'd rather see a frame swap then a cut frame I didn't do or see get done. That's the beauty of these trucks, they're so modular you can mix and match parts to get what you want.

Re: short bed or long?

Could also be a cab swap or glovebox door swap. You need to check all the vins to figure out what you've really got.
Gb door
Driver door metal tag
Frame

What is the model number on the spid? Ce1 or ce2? 3/4 ton cab or door if a 2.

I think it does hurt resale slightly. Look at it this way, it's giving you second thoughts, so it will give others also. Regardless, asking price seems a bit high.

That's a little high for a California Frankentruck. 71 long bed cab on a who knows short frame with 68 fenders and aftermarket cowl hood. It is a big block but what do you know about the motor, trans, rearend etc.... I don't think I would pay over $5k for it. Just my opinion.

Re: short bed or long?

He wanted 7000, and offered 5000. But he only came down to 6800. That's true about not knowing about engine and transmission and the rear end

Re: short bed or long?

I live in L.A. and know that there is always a certain mark up that will always be. But you could pick up a big block truck for about $2k and swap it over to a short bed frame for a whole lot less than $4800. If you want a short step with 396.....it's already done and it's titled in CA. But I think I would stand firm at $5k. He will come down when he realizes its never gonna sell for 7
