Bilstein Shock Question

Okay, I'm ready to pull the trigger and order a set of Bilstein Heavy Duty Mono-Tube Gas Shocks for my 72 long box trailing arm stock height truck. Does anyone have a of these on their truck and if so how long have they been on and do you find the ride and handling of the truck any better, harsher etc. ?

Re: Bilstein Shock Question

I just replaced my Bilstein's on my truck with a set of Napa Response shocks. It's an 84 c10. Way nicer shock. Smoother, not bone jarring over bumps. The owner of the Napa said while the bilstein's are a good shock they're intended to keep a high performance wider tire firmly planted on the ground for handling. Truck's don't need that type of shock unless you're building an autocrosser.
With the bilstein's you're buying the hype. Everybody thinks they need them. You need a shock that smoothly absorbs the bumps in a street driven truck.

Re: Bilstein Shock Question

Thanks for the responses, now I'm not sure if Bilstein is the way to go.

Re: Bilstein Shock Question

Re: Bilstein Shock Question

IMHO, Bilsteins are a great shock. Bilsteins will easily get over 100k miles and are warranted for life. If they ever get spongy or leak Bilstein will replace them. The are standard equipment on many GM four wheel drives, all Z71s all S10 four wheel drives and extremes. they are also the OEM supplier for about 30 other GM vehicles, all Mercedes Benz, lots of BMWs, and many other car and truck manufacturers. They do cost more but this is another example of you get what you pay for.

Re: Bilstein Shock Question

CCP carries Bilsteins repackaged by RCD, Race Car Dynamics, out of San Diego. I got mine from RCD before they started selling to CCP. Give CCP a call. If hey can't help call RCD, they will get you the correct part and let you know where you can buy them from as I think they are now strictly wholesalers. Be ready with a few answers about the ride height, like the measurements from upper to lower shock mounts, and the measurement from bump stop to where the stop hits at ride height.

I know Bilsteins are a great product, they are are on my dd 99 cop tahoe and work perfect on there. My concern is will the ride quality change on my truck because it rides so well now I dont want the ride to be harsher with the New shocks. I can get a pretty good deal on them at EShocks.com

The Heavy Duty version will be a little rough, Unfortunately they don't make a Comfort or 5100 shock for these trucks.

With a big block, Running the Heavy Duties on the front will be perfect, The rear will beat you up unless its loaded.

I gotta ask, if your truck rides so well now, why are you replacing the shocks? When I buy new shocks, it's because the old ones are worn out (or degraded enough to bother me) and as a result, the vehicle no longer rides well.

Have you considered Monroe Sensatracs? I've heard nothing but good about them, mainly about their ride quality.

I thought someone would ask that question. I am changing the rear differential on my truck. I've had the truck since 2001 and haven't changed the shocks. Although the shocks arent leaking the rubbers are all squished and cracked and the shocks have no paint left on them so for all I know they could be originals. My thinking is that if I am going to yank the diff I might as well change out the shocks at the same time, Then as long as I have the truck ( and it will be in my estate) I know what I have.

I first looked at Monroes but they wanted 92.00 a piece here.

Try expanding your search.... I checked just one place, Summit Racing, and they want $37 each. Other places might be cheaper...
