1962 gmc 4x4 front drum to disc conversion?
Looking to see if there is any previous threads concerning changing the front drum system to disc on a 62 gmc 4x4 with dana axle.

Install later model axles, the old axles are not worth the time to mess with them

It was JPBrecheisen and the post is on page 4 of the 4x4 section "1962 GMC Front axle With Disc Brakes" . It looks like a lot of work but it came out looking great! Good read.

Re: 1962 gmc 4x4 front drum to disc conversion?
Seems like it'd be easier to go through the junkyard and find Dana 44 front axle out of a Chevy, Dodge, Jeep or Ford, find the right width and move the spring mounting perches.
The Dana 44 is the most common axle assembly in America, and has been in continuous use since the early '50s. -Brad

In my opinion, it would be much easier to find a '70-'79 Dana 44 or a '80-'91 8.5 10 bolt that matches the gear ratio you need and just change the entire differential.

Re: 1962 gmc 4x4 front drum to disc conversion?
he probably has 3.90 rear gears in the rear and 3.92 in front. I don't thank they made an open knuckle with these gears. you would have to change the ring & pinion if the 3.92 is available, or change both ft and rear axle's. I am going to run drums with a hydro-vac from a 3/4-1 ton. we will see-----------just remembered it's a GMC which has a dana rear?? was thinking about a chevy HO. what ratio did the gmc come with? same r&p ft and rear (size)?
