Problems gluing rear view mirror to windshield

Tried moving the stock mirror down, got the glue for it. Says that its a permanent bond, if you do it wrong, do not remove, glue a new one over top, like its some powerful stuff.

read direction, followed, waited 30 mins, put mirror back on, it fell off windshield, started all over, let it sit 24hrs through a nice warm day, put mirror back on, it fell off, 3rd time I have glued the metal bit on, did it yesterday, gonna wait a week?

one guy I talked to who had this problem said this

"They said the glass had become contaminated and
would never hold a mirror again." when he failed to glue one on and a glass comapny failed.

how does that happen? not like its pouris???

maybe a light scuffin?????

Re: Problems gluing rear view mirror to windshield

We use Loctite 312 adhesive made for that and haven't had any comebacks. Has a primer that's used on the glass and metal tab, and wait 24 hours before hanging the mirror. Works great, only thing we've found that will hold.

Re: Problems gluing rear view mirror to windshield

Forgot to add that we sand the tab to clean it, and so there is more surface area for the glue to grab to.

Re: Problems gluing rear view mirror to windshield

I just went through this with mine. I used the loctite brand mirror adhesive the first time. Followed all directions to the tee. 1st time...fail. Tried a package from an independent auto parts place (don't remember the brand) 2nd time...fail. Gave it one more shot using a 3M mirror adhesive from Advance and now has held for the last two weeks and counting.

Re: Problems gluing rear view mirror to windshield

Well its the glue sticking to the window thats the problem.

Its stuck well to the metal

I guess Ill just try something other then Permatex brand if the 3rd time fails, havn't put it back on yet. Im using a spare one from the parts S15 to leave the stock one in place.

As its for my Firebird, with the notchback and the 1in lift in the rear gone, its not sits level and I can't see crap out the tiny back window with it in the stock spot, only place I can see well is to move it down to the middle of the window.

Re: Problems gluing rear view mirror to windshield

I second going to a glass shop as well. I have one that comes out here a few times a week so it's cheating, but the stuff they use with the primer is pretty wicked. Another trick the glass guy showed me is to rub the button on the concrete to rough it up a bit.

Re: Problems gluing rear view mirror to windshield

3 days and some superglue around the edge has the permatex "sticking" but I don't adjust it without holding the base. if it falls off ill try again with better stuff. nice being able to see people, only way before they had to be right on my bumper.

Re: Problems gluing rear view mirror to windshield

i got the glue from autozone and cleaned and primed the glass and metal thing. Hung the mirror after about 30 minutes and when i came back the next day it was on the floor.

then i got the glue from oreillys. I sandblasted the metal thing. Cleaned the windsheild again and razorbladed it again. Let the metal thing sit for 24 hours or so. Mirrors been solid for a couple weeks in socal sun and heat.

i think sandblasting the metal thing helped.
