What's the deal on the small back windows?

I had a guy send me to look at a small back window C50 thinking it was a 67. When i got there turns out it was a 70 vin#CE530P177942 that 0 is for a 1970.
Then when I got home I googled C50s and turns out lots of them have a small back windows. I not really up on big trucks so, tell me the deal on these trucks with the little windows. By the way, it's a totally RUST FREE ex fire truck with 7159 miles!!!!! I want to put the cab on a 1/2 ton frame, and a C10 doghouse. So will it work? Pictures will come Monday when I get to work. Thanks for any info on this.

They pretty much all had small back windows, although Panoramic windows were available as an option. Not sure why they still used the small window but most large trucks of any size or make do have small windows. There's usually nothing to see back there anyway and it's just something that can break

It's not always the miles, but the lack of paint on the inside metal that makes them rust.

Look at the lower front of the doors. Bigger trucks had part of the doors, and cab cut (or not there) for the big tires/wheelwells.

Ya, I was wondering if I would have to weld in a small triangle on the lower corner of the doors to make them look right . The rockers are a bit short also. Forgot to mention that the cab mounts are still soft, I was simply amazed......Now is the floor shorter? The heater seems to stick out from under the dash quite a bit.

Welcome to the 67-72 Chevy Truck board and the Heavy Haulers forum Ft.ValloniaStreaker!

Sounds like you have a cool project started.
There's more than a few members here who have gotten into blending the light and
medium duty bodies and frames...a fun way to create a unique custom street rig.

Looking forward to your pics!

The floor, rockers, a pillars and doors are different. My understanding is that the mount points for the front sheet metal are different as well but I don't know for sure. The differences for the other is to make room for larger wheels set further back and for tucking the engine farther back. It uses the same heater but has an extension that moves it out about four or five inches into the cab. The steering column also mounts lower under the instrument cluster (different bezel) and also hits the floor much lower, that tilts the wheel farther up.

Personally I don't think using one of these cabs on a pickup would be worth he trouble.

If you do get it and decide to take it apart, send me a PM, I might be interested in some parts.

Re: What's the deal on the small back windows?

The Small Back Windows are on big trucks for a few reasons. One being that they all had large West Coast style Mirrors and they weren't really needed. Another reason would be that most got a Dump Body, a Flat Bed with a Full Steel Headboard, or a Box Body in which the Back Window would have no use at all. Another reason would be pretty much like what Tim stated. Something larger to just to break.

I'm a big fan of the Small Back Window. If it wasn't so hard to convert, I would love to have one on my '72 C-10.

I agree with Richard. Putting a Cab like that on a Pick-Up may be more trouble than it is worth.

That truck sure sounds like it would make a great Roll Back or Car Carrier.

Post some pictures if you can.

Bill

There is square body C 50 or 60 tow truck in salt lake city with a big back window. Looks neat.

Re: What's the deal on the small back windows?

You can't put a 10-30 clip on a medium duty cab. I thought you were saying you were using the clip. there are many differences and you will need to modify/fabricate to accomplish mounting a medium duty cab on a light duty frame. The easiest way to do a big boy pickup is to put a bed on the medium duty.
