81 Replace Air cond. Compressor

My ac was working OK last year. Clutch bearing making noise this year after I cleaned the thing. I degunked it and hosed it good. Had to tighten/replace the little bolts on the outside of the hub

Looks like a whole new compressor and clutch from Rock Auto is only 'bout $150. Before seeing the price of $150 Was thinking of just replacing the bearing and replaceing the seal since it has a slow leak, or just getting a whole newcluth. Heck the clutch is about $85

Just wondered what others have done? Just replace the whole compressor with clutch?

It also has the two post elec plug. Is that what is called the switch type compressor?

Re: 81 Replace Air cond. Compressor

I haven't had many compressors or clutches go over the years but the ONE time I replaced the clutch and not the compressor the compressor blew in a month I figure just do it once do it right and replace the whole component ( if its an older vehicle)

Re: 81 Replace Air cond. Compressor

Thats what im thinkin, It worked ok just annoying bearing noise when unengaged.

Main thing is it slowly leaked out the R134 already this summer. figure its the seal under the clutch at the shaft cause all the other line seals were replaced.

Just a noisy bearing and bad seal.
