Anyone know how to switch from AM to FM on a stock 67-70' radio?

Re: Stock Radio How To AM/FM
If it's the original radio there's no FM. I believe the AM/FM came out in '72 and should have a sliding switch to go back and forth.

I just looked and it looks like the AM/FM came out in '71.

Well that explains it, my truck is a 70'.
The FM Converter seems like a good option, wanna keep the original radio. Any threads on where to get one and install tips? Thanks! |

Re: Stock Radio How To AM/FM
I had a guy take my stock AM radio and take the guts out. He installed new electronics to make it 2-channel with an amp out and AM/FM/MP3 compatible. PM me for his info.

Re: Stock Radio How To AM/FM
Here is a link to a thread on the AM/FM radios.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=579254 Probably the best from an originality standpoint is to convert an AM for 70 down trucks. Factory AM/FM are expensive and of fairly poor performance. Even for the later trucks I would still do a conversion.

Re: Stock Radio How To AM/FM
The optional am/fm was first used and installed in fullsize GM C/K trucks in 1970, we personally owned a gold 70 CST/10 eight or so years back (truck was sold to a Canadian) with the OE am/fm installed and listed as option #U69 on the spid, truck was originally ordered and delivered to Ron Tonkin Chevrolet here in the Northwest. We also parted a 70 motorhome that had an am/fm installed when it left the factory, as usual the radio was long gone but it was listed on the spid as #U69 am/fm p button radio. This was also an ordered and loaded up CustomCamper/30 chinook cab and chassis r/v that also had a bigblock, a/c, buckets and tach. We had added pictures of the half ton and its spid on this website when the same subject came up before years ago, and have since w/o much luck been able to find/get many of our older pictures back after the big 07' computer crash. Mel
You will find a ton of good info on this truck site but some of the time you may have to decipher what could be "fact" from someones knowledge in living, breathing & owning nearly 300 of these trucks or "fiction" from someones knowledge in owning a truck or two who may or may not be a book/computer nut only posting what they feel is the gospel after reading it somewhere while doing a quick google search. I have said it here many times over the years, not everything pertaining to these trucks was put into the books and or manuals... |

Re: Stock Radio How To AM/FM
The originals are being repopped but it's anyone's guess as to build quality and accuracy as they are fairly new, and over 500 bucks. Personally Im going to run an external amp and iPod controller, and possibly a hard drive, most likely hidden behind a radio delete plate that will flip up. The conversions for AM radios are your best bet for originality, and your wallet. Good luck with your choice!

Re: Stock Radio How To AM/FM
Thanks for all the advice! I am going for as stock as possible, so will keep my AM radio as is for now and possibly forever.
At the end of my build (paint/interior) I'll probably do something with modern stereo/nav system in the center console, something that can be hidden for shows and exposed for daily driving. cheers! |

Gotta remember they had to get rid of old stock but if a person specifically ordered an am/fm, they would have come up with one.

Re: Stock Radio How To AM/FM
There's a thread I believe it's the best mod for under $50 thread that talks about being able to splice in and use an Ipod with the old am radio's.
