I put a 400 tranny out of 1988 pickup how do I get the speedo to work

There is lsx engine swap sticky in the engine forum. Most are using trans with speedometer that is electronic. You can find what others are doing to make them work. Also here is a google search which shows some options.

I put the tranny in a 72 chevy pickup I heard that u can just switch out the gear in tranny for the speedo to work?

It is a TH400 (no lockup, no electronics)? If that is the case, then you can swap the electronic pulse generator for an early driven gear and output for a mechanical speedo.
