700R4 Tranny for 1970 K10 4x4

I have a 1970 K10 4x4 that currently has a SBC 350 with a Turbo 350 tranny. I want to swap the Turbo 350 tranny for a 700R4 tranny. Has anyone done this swap before? I'm guessing that there must be a conversion kit with new brackets or tranny mounts. I'm going to mate the new tranny to a 383 stroker. If anyone has done the tranny swap I'd love to hear how you did it and any mods that are needed. Thanks!

I'm sure it can be done but you may have trouble finding the adapter to your transfer case. You may have to change to a 208 transfer case.

You are completely right. However you need to put a different output shaft in the 700r4. Search Advanced Adapters website for the part. The last time I priced this swap out the output shaft was cheaper at Summit Racing than the AA website.

Because the transmission is almost two inches longer than the th350, you'll need to move your engine forward that distance or move the t-case back and do work on your driveshafts. It seems the consensus here is it is best to move the engine forward.

This swap is on my list. I even have the core transmission on the floor in the shop waiting for the money to have it rebuilt and have that output shaft installed.

That would depend on what T case he has I had to change mine when I went from the 205 to the 208. 205 is all steel and 208 is aluminum I also had to change the out put shaft in the T400 so if he gets a 700R4 that was not in a 4x4 he may have to change the output shaft. I'm not sure on any of this just saying what I went through.

I did this swap and you cna use all of the stock stuff. I moved the engine further forward which helped the distance between the firewall and the dist and had to move the linkage for shifting forward a little. But besides that they are right you need the right output shaft for your transfer case but you can use all of the stock cross members and drive shafts.

Re: 700R4 Tranny for 1970 K10 4x4

Did anyone doing this swap have any issues using the existing turbo 350 tv cable with the new 700r4? I put a 90 700r4 tranny in my 70 k5 blazer and the cable hookup just doesn't seem right I had to fight it all the way, jus curious if anyone else had any issues, for the original post I had to get a new output shaft for the transmission and move my mounting backets back about 1.5 inches and shorten the rear driveshaft

That's how I did my 1972 K-10 'Burb. Different output shaft, moved the crossmember forward. I also changed the transmission linkage. I got the output shaft and linkage from Advanced Adapters. Had to get a TV kit from them too to mate the TV cable to my carberator.

If you are running a Carter/Edelbrock carb make sure you get the little linkage geometry corrector bracket that bolts on to your carb. And adjust your TV cable right or you will burn the 700R4 up. Check out www.transmissioncenter.net

Re: 700R4 Tranny for 1970 K10 4x4

I just completed my swap...thanks for the info on the tv cable, my 700r4 came out of a 90 burb 2wd, I had to get a shorter output shaft as described, and I moved my tcase crossmember back about 1.5". I had to get a new front driveshaft made anyways due to the 6" lift I put on previously. I ordered a new tv cable and carb linkage adapter off ebay (roughly $50.00) Only hiccup o far is the dipstick outta the burb wouldn't fit in my 70 k5 so I stuck with the one that was in the truck and haveta guess when its full. (10qts so far so good) all in all wasn't a bad swap...Im into it about $800
Free tranny $0
Installation of shorter shaft $600
TV cable and linkage $50.00
12 qts synthetic tranny fluid $90.00
Saving gas mileage and wear tear on my motor:priceless
