Rear end options for my 87?

Hey all...I have an 87 C10 with stock 10 bolt. Its 1 wheel wonder and has god awful gears in it. I don't think I've used overdrive in a long time!

I was looking around local classifieds to see if I could find someone selling a 10 bolt posi rear, and if I'm lucky maybe find one with some decent gears in it.

Are there any other options as far as rear ends that would fit in the 80's body style trucks?

What do you all think is the most economic option for posi and 3.42 or 3.73 gears?

Re: Rear end options for my 87?

I am currently swapping in a rear from a 96 9c1 police car. it has 3:73 and a limited slip in it. took it to a local shop that builds race car chassis (circle track dirt cars) and for $75 bucks he welded on my perches, shock mounts and set the pinion angle since I flipped the axle over the leafs. I picked up the rear off a friend for 50 with disc brakes and all

Thanks for the info. Do you know if this is a spring style posi or G80 Eaton style posi? I bet they hold up pretty well being they ran them in the cop cars.

I swapped from a 10 bolt to a 12 bolt out of a 70's truck, my brake backing plates bolted right up no mods needed

My 85 has a 12 bolt in it that I swapped out of my old 83 shortbed. But I am not sure what it originally come out of. It bolted right in. Did half tons come out with a factory 12 bolt?

Re: Rear end options for my 87?

Look for a posi out of a 71-81 Camaro, 73-77 Chevelle, 71-90's Full size Chevrolets. That is were you will get a good posi not the truck gov-lok. Most of these used the 8.5 10 bolt. Just remember that 2.56 and down is a 2 series and 2.73 and up is a 3 series. you can use the 2 series with a ring gear spacer if you want 2.73+ gearing. All half tons got 10 bolts in 1982. 1981 and older used the 12 bolt.
