Bonding with my son
I was going to pick up a pizza for supper last night and asked my 13 year old son if he wanted to go. He said, what are you driving? I said the Envoy, and he said, let's take the truck, it's cooler. I was happy to hear that. I have always been a car/truck guy and he has just recently started to show interest in old cars and trucks. I hope to be able to create a stronger bond with him through my truck. He has asked me several times recently if he can have my truck when he gets his license. My truck is an old beater but I am glad he still thinks it is cool. My wife on the other hand, that's a different story...

Re: Bonding with my son
I'm only 25 and feel the 67-72 enthusiasts are a dying breed. Most kids are into video games and import cars with so much camber that Paul walker wouldn't even drive. Pass all your love and knowledge of these trucks down to him since he's showing interest. Even though you feel the trucks a beater he'll always have memories in it.

Re: Bonding with my son
That's great your son is interested in your truck.
My teenaged daughters always choose the truck for transport when I am driving them somewhere...my teenaged son used to but now he always picks his Mustang my Dad bought him as his first car.

Re: Bonding with my son
Nows the time to buy another one.In 3 years you can have a running driving truck that he has some sweat equity into and will appreciate more. You'll bond even more over helping him do the work to get it safe and reliable. And on top of that he'll really love the first time there's a cruise night and you can both take a truck. The memories will be with him for a lifetime, you too.

Re: Bonding with my son
My 13 year old boy loves riding in the truck with me. The plan is to get him his own 67-72 when he's 15. Whatever he saves, I'll match up to 2K (which buys a hell of a nice legal registered driver in this area). I give him most of my old takeoff parts, and he's got quite a collection going now. For birthdays, Easter, etc. I will get a tool or two for him to add to his set.
This Christmas, we're buying him a lawn mower and weed trimmer, so he can have a lawn business to save up for the truck. The above is I believe how work ethic and responsibility is taught, but it sure isn't easy. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Bonding with my son
I do agree with you, but I sure do love my little 93 toyota truck. Over 300,000 miles and it still runs like a champ! I think my mini truck goes great with my chevy and hope to show them together at car shows some day.

Re: Bonding with my son
That's the kind of story that you will cherish your whole life..the kind of memories that money can't buy.You are a blessed man...And I chuckled when I read the last line.My wife is the same way.Just be glad your son has an interest in your old truck...and continue the bonding with him. They're grown before you know it.

Re: Bonding with my son
. . . .
The picture below, was taken almost exactly a year ago . . . they both have changed so much. The one on the right has grown FOUR inches since then . . . in a blink-of-an-eye they will be all grown up. Cherish EVERY moment you have with your son !!! ( and take lots of pictures too ) . . . . |

Re: Bonding with my son
I built a 71 GMC with my son when he was 15. He just turned 29 and still loves that old truck. The experience and time spent with him while building it was priceless.
