Inline 6 headers
Hey has anybody used the tube style headers like hedman makes for these engines? I would like the Langdon split manifolds but the Herman's are alot cheaper. The only think I do t want is cracked, leaky headers, that drives me nuts. So let me know what you guys think because if I will have problems with the hedmans I will pay extra for the cast iron split manifolds, thanks.

Steel tube hedders may leak/crack and they do rust thru occasionally and do increase temps in the engine compartment.
Cast Iron headers (langdons version fits 194/230/250/292) are less leak pron, less likely to crack, rust thru about as often as a factory iron manifold - rare, and likely raise the under hood temps a bit but not as much as tube headers. Both are a compromise as they require more complex exhaust bending and both will require you plumb either exhaust heat or hot water to the intake to retain starting and cold weather drivability at useable levels. If its not a big mean hot six, the factory manifold with 2" single exhaust all the way back and a smooth flowing performance muffler will give you best bang for the buck. |

From a standpoint of installation of headers the CU IN dimensions probably won't matter. I believe all the exhausts are the same on at least the 194/230 and 250....pretty sure the 292 exhaust manifold is same too.

Actually, headers alone, can add 10 to 25 hp and equivalent torque in the useable ranges of the power band to a factory six in good condition. A lot depends on how you plumb it. Intake and igniton are also part of that overall equation. If you go over 2" on duals, you push all of your gains out the tail pipes in the form of not enough restriction....might even lower the numbers the motor is capable of. If you go Langdon iron headers talk to tom before you buy and start bending pipe. But, yer gonna have ta figure out what motor for him to give ya best advice.

I ran the Hedman split headers on my last '66GMC w/ 250. No adverse effects, ran great no leaks. I used a good gasket, not the paper one that comes with them. Ran dual 2 1/4" straight pipes(no mufflers) exited at a 45 degree in front of left rear wheel.
Any header is going to out flow and perform better than the stock manifold. |
