Re: Comin over to the sqaure bodies with a '78 Silverado!

Well, things have progressed on the wrong end of the truck and before winter set in. The rear end has basically quit life and I decided to pull the bed as well to make it easier...and, of course, I might as well clean the frame and, and, and, and classic snowball. Haha.

So tonight I pulled the box and took some photos. This is the factory exhaust from 1978 except that the original owner added corvair turbo mufflers in 1979. Can't believe they held up this long. Also, he lowered the truck the same year by re-locating the spring perches.

Re: Comin over to the sqaure bodies with a '78 Silverado!

So the next step is to get the rear end out from under the truck and find myself a shop to rebuild it. I don't really have the tools to do it, and from the sounds of setting proper back lash, I don't think I'll have the patience either.

Re: Comin over to the sqaure bodies with a '78 Silverado!

I'm about the same place with mine, Cort. Except mine's a stepside and have not removed the bed and don't want to! I'm wondering how the PO lowered your truck so much by just moving the spring perches up. I put drop shackles on mine and it's ass is still sticking up, huge gaps between tops of tires and wheel openings.

The Corvair turbo mufflers are an interesting mod. I have a Corvair. Actually, more than one, LOL. That is a cool truck!

Anyway, I've got the old rotten oak bed out, have Trex boards cut to length, stainless bed strips and a new back bumper. Need to get stainless hardware to bolt the new bed in. Need to build around the new drop shackles, which go all the way to the bottom of the bed now. Running out of time. Will have to skip painting the frame.

Re: Comin over to the sqaure bodies with a '78 Silverado!

I am surprised the front spring mount is not hitting the bottom of the bed. That looks like an easy 4" drop right there. Nicely done too, as it tips the pinion up to maintain a decent driveshaft angle.
Cort, go on the HAMB website and see who the hot rodders in Portland use to do their differential work, probably your best bet for quality work.

Re: Comin over to the sqaure bodies with a '78 Silverado!

Thanks Chris! I found out that a place called Six States seems to be the best around here. I talked with Don and he quoted me $285 plus parts. Looks like a 3:73 limited slip will be around $540 their price. I'm sure it's marked up a bit, they are a business afterall. No big whoop, I just need this thing back together so I can get at least one more camping trip in this summer.

Re: Comin over to the sqaure bodies with a '78 Silverado!

Got the axle out today and off to the shop. Pulled apart the springs and blasted all the u-bolts and misc. hardware to get everything ready to go back together. No pics of the pretty stuff yet.

And, as much as I want to, I don't think I'll be bringing the frame down to bare metal and repainting this time. The frame is in great shape and there is no real rust that needs attention so I am going to leave it for now so I can get the truck back on the road.

Thanks!

I got the axle back from the shop today. Now I am just waiting for my polyurethane bushings to arrive so I can press them into my leafs and then re-install everything. I am really excited to have limited slip 3:73's!

I was hoping I could get one more camping trip in this summer but it turns out I am not allowed to tow anything for the first 500 miles until the new gears are broken in. Damn. I guess I'll have to use a tent.

Re: Comin over to the sqaure bodies with a '78 Silverado!

Do they recommend synthetic fluid during or after break-in of the gears? What about your friction modifier for the LSD? I think you will like the 3.73's, since the Turbo 400 does not have as low a first gear as a Turbo 350 the extra 10% of gear will help roll out and hills. Summer is not officially over till the 21st so you still have some time!

Sure wish I could get a deal like that! I called around here to have my 10 bolt rebuilt with 3.73s and an Eaton Posi, and they wanted $1300 OUT of the truck and $1500 in the truck!

They said no synthetic at all. And yes I have to add the GM LS friction modifier. My break in period is 500 miles so I definitely won't be camping this month. I don't drive that much.

Re: Comin over to the sqaure bodies with a '78 Silverado!

Well, I got the axle bolted up tonight. Took me 4 hours to get out the old leaf bushings. Holy, I never want to do that again. I am sore. Then I installed the new polyurethane bushings.

I don't have any pics of anything yet. It is dark out right now.

So, now for you for you gurus out there, since I have swapped from 3:40 gears to 3:73, which speedo gear do I need to install to have an accurate speedo?

I have 26.5" tall tires, 3:73 rear end, T400. Any help figuring what I need to install is very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Try this out:

http://www.tciauto.com/tc/speedometer-gear-calculator/

Also source for gears, some gears are discontinued from GM now

Re: Comin over to the sqaure bodies with a '78 Silverado!

Well, here are some pics. It took everything I had not to clean and paint the frame. I just don't have the time right now. So forgive the ugliness surrounding the new axle.

Just waiting for my new air shocks to show up and then I can throw the bed back on. I went ahead and replaced the rear u-joint as well just because I was there.

Looks good Cort. I know what you mean, I think I would be driven crazy at that point also on whether to strip and paint....but driving is so much better!

Thanks man! Yeah it's all about understanding their quirks.

Is big valley in the corridor? I've traveled on the 1 down to Medicine Hat but never been up above Calgary. I really like Alberta.

Re: Comin over to the sqaure bodies with a '78 Silverado!

Got the bed back on and everything hooked up except the new shocks. They should be here next week sometime.

Went for the first 20 mile break-in. Oh man I'm gonna like these gears. Barely touch the throttle and you're off! I really wanted to get on it, but I can't for another 80 miles.

Took a pic of the little brown truck sitting pretty after her first run with the new axle:

Re: Comin over to the sqaure bodies with a '78 Silverado!

How much is your rear lowered with the relocated brackets? I know it was done by the PO, but is there any way for you to measure the actual drop?

I just picked up an '80 C10 Stepper, and it came with spindles and springs to drop the fron 4.5", and this would be an inexpensive way to get the rear down to match.

Any issues with bottoming on the frame? I noticed that it hasn't been notched...
