Unusual 55 pickup? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm looking at a 55 chevy pickup to buy. It's a 3/4 ton, 6 cylinder, three speed on the column, long bed. Is this an unusual or rare truck? The guy selling it says they didn't make many of these. Does anyone have any ideas on this? Either way, the price is right, I can't pass it up. I was just wondering.

IMO what you describe is just a bare bones no option truck.
Unless its a Cameo (fiberglass fleet side bed sides)?
I assume its a 55 2nd series which looks like the 56.
Cameos are rare and carry a high value.

If you like it and its a good deal. Buy it no matter what it is

They built 2 versions of 3/4 ton long beds; 8' and 9'.

Thanks for the reply Denny. It's not a Cameo, it is second series. What this guy said was the fact that it was a 3/4 ton long bed with 3 speed on the column is the unusual part. No matter what, the price is right. $400.00. I just wanted some input. I really don't know if I want to rod it, or leave it originial. If it was something special, I would leave it originial. If not, I wouldn't worry about that. Anyway, thanks for your reply.

If it had a 3spd hydromatic then its a little more rare than 3spd standard of which still I have only seen a few. really, any factory 55-59 column shift truck is unusual to see any more. almost all you see on the road have th350 or th400 in them and or 3spd on the floor.

now that I think of it I'm not sue if they made a 3spd standard w/column shift but I can definatley find out.

Hello I am going to paste in a picture of a 1956 Long Wheelbased 3/4 ton that came as a big window cab. Not a Cameo. Just bought with the big window option.

I might also add that I had a similar '56 with a 3/4 ton frame that someone cut down to a short bed!

My '56 had a big window cab and had a three on the tree! This was my very first 55-59 that I bought and I lived in Cortez Colorado at the time.

As far as rarity... I don't think they were all that rare, out in New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado there were hundreds of the 55-59 trucksparked around the country side when I lived there in the mid 80's.

Must be that every Southwest farmer must have owned a Chevy back then!

yeah I'm from Phoenix and these trucks are more abundant out here than anywhere else I've been. You're even more likely to find a rustier 60-66 out here than a rusty 55-59, I should know because I've looked for parts trucks for both and all I've seen for my 64 is garbage. I just happen to know where several 55-59 trucks are sittin' in a few farm feilds w/ decent body's.

Thanks for the replies guys. I bought the truck! It's in pieces. The rockers are shot, and the step panels need to be replaced. But it is complete. Another project. Now, I am looking for a good windshield for someone else. This guy has a 56 pickup, and the windshield has a big white spot in the bottom left hand corner about a foot in diameter just in front of the drivers door. He asked if I could perhaps find him a windshield. Anybody know of one cheap?
