My 1954 Chevy PickUp-truck

Hi,
i´m going frustrated with assembling the bed...it looks like the bed sits to high because now i have a gap between the running board filler piece and the bed itself. I will send detailed photos on suterday.
Does anyone have informations how tall the original cross sills are on a 54 build Chevy Truck? Next question: Is my Assembling correct (sketched below)?

Robin: I've got a '49 3100 and your bed set up looks the same as mine so I think it's correct. I have about 3/8" ( 8mm? ) between the top of the filler panel and the bottom of the bed side. How big is your gap?
I'm sure someone with a '54 will chime in and give you some good info.

Hi Robin the drawing is correct and as far as I know the cross sills are all the same with the exception of the different hole patterns for the different years of wood,and for the gap there is one mine is about 1/2 inch between the box and filler plate

Hi, the gap is about 3/4" to 1" ...the filler panel can´t be screwed to the fender hole. I will send Pictures on Saturday...

its allmost like the floor needs to lay on top of the L profile either that or the profile is mounted to low on the bed

Hey Robin - from the pictures it looks like the running board isn't fastened to the fear fender. If you fasten them together does that move the filler panel up and close the gap ? Do you have an after market frame or the stock one ? Are the running board brackets mounted correctly? Could you shim between the running board bracket and the bottom of the running board to close that gap ?
Maybe someone should hop a flight and come over and help you out. Anyone willing ?

looks like your bed is the correct height, the step matches your fender.
if you close the gap with a shorter bed sill your fender will be under the step.
you filler piece looks new, maybe that is for a different year.

Starting from the front of the box you should have a rubber block 1/4 inch and the small plate under your cross bar the second cross has nothing ,the third and fourth has the same as the first ,and the first,third and fourth is what the box bolts run threw to bolt down the box to frame,on the one picture with the 2 arrows you point out gaps there should not be any,the other thing i noticed is it looks like your frame has bean cut off at the end where your bolts hold the box down,it almost looks like your jacks are holding up the box to high in the rear but its hard to tell from the picture

I don't think I will be of any help, but I do know that I used to have a 1954 chevy truck that had a ruined frame because of a bad clip job. We had a rusted out 1951 truck that had a good frame and combined the1954 sheet metal with the 1951 frame. Due to differences in the changes made over the years the bed sat about two inches too high. Possibly you have an older frame with the 54 sheet metal. However that is just a slight possibility since it doesn't seem to sit as high as my bed did; and I assume it fit properly when you took the truck apart.

More thoughts on your bed problem. Is it possible that you have a 54 bed on a pre 53 frame? If I remember right the 54 frame has a shorter kick up over the axle so the bed sits lower. Was your bed installed on this frame or is it an aftermarket bed that you are trying to install?

I also have a 1954 and I am currently taking the bed off. If I can help by doing some measurements let me know.

Are the bed rails that came with your kit al the same height? I am looking at my frame and see no differences with yours, but if the rails are in the wrong places then I think that would cause your problem.

Ya, if your frame is not 54/55, then your 54 bed wont sit down far enough.

Another thing to consider is the 54/55 splash aprons are different than the 47-53.

Good evening Gents:

This will be my first post. Been reviewing all the posts for gaining some knowledge before I begin my 1951 GMC build. I wanted to say thank you for all the great insight and start some dialogue with anyone with experience with what I am about to attempt.

For starters, I replaced the rusted and tattered 1951 chassis for a 2000 S-10 chassis and purchased a motor mount kit and the S-10 chassis swap kit from Advanced Design Engineering (ADE). It only made since because Robert Hertz, owner of ADE had already did all the figuring/measurements and fabricated all the body mount brackets, bed sill cross members and the like for the S-10 Chassis swap. Plus I am a neophyte (as green or as wet behind the ears as it gets) at this venture. So green I am still learning the nomenclature of frame and body parts.

Here's my question, does anyone know if there are any good resources (books, periodicals, drawings, or assembly notes) out there to help a first timer with the proper steps to take starting with step one through step one thousand? With a ton of helpful hints / lessons learned to avoid making the big mistakes and blunders? I know I am going to make some anyway but always like not repeating the same ones someone else did and is willing to share!
