Knob Job
So, I needed to turn on the headlights on my 'new' '66, and the plastic stock knob pulled off the stem.
I thought the old knobs were kinda yoo-gly anyway, so I set out to give the dash a knob job. First, I wanted a nice set of knobs, nothing garish or too bizarre. What I found was a classic 'milk bottle' design at Home Depot. A bonus was they are brushed aluminum. Solid, as well. I gauged the shaft of the headlight switch bayonet, and decided a 1/4-20 tap would work. I drilled the knob out to the appropriate size, and ran a tap into it. The bayonet is triangular, so I used a bit of Lock-Tite to insure it stayed on. Now, the windshield wiper/washer knob was the oddball. It has a button inside the knob that activates the washer. So, I repeated the above process. The shaft of the assembly is round, so no Lock-tite was necessary. I drilled completely through the new knob with the bit used for the tapping process. This centered the hole in the knob. Then I chose an appropriate sized bit to hog out the knob so my chubby fingers could actually press the washer button. A little trial and error got me the correct depth... Last edited by lostsheep; 09-08-2013 at 11:50 PM. |

Re: Knob Job
Here's the new look. I still need to buff the bezels on each knob, but it's a start.
Total cost- $6 ( actually $12, I bought extra knobs for other uses, and in case I boogered one up.) |

Re: Knob Job
You inspired me, lostsheep. I went out tonight, purchased the same knob and made a replacement for my beat-up thrift air knob. It looks and works great, thanks!

Re: Knob Job
Glad you all like it.
I know it's a small detail, but the small ones add up. It was cheap, easy and turned out well. I'm sure glad my cell phone has a camera, because I would NEVER remember to take pics with a regular camera. Now I'm searching for the site where I saw a stock instrument panel that had been re-done, and the black background replaced with a woodgrain look. The panel stayed the same, just the background was wood grained. Looked really nice. |

Re: Knob Job
Now to get a universal cigarette lighter for the complete dash look.
