Red face New Truck - Picked it up Saturday

It's a 1965 C-10 stepside, 230 straight 6, 3 on the tree. Runs great (unfortunately, now I feel bad yanking it out in the new couple months for an 8 with a 4 speed rock crusher). But I want something I ran rip donuts and smoke the tires on demand haha.

Couple questions, the dash is ripped apart. There looks like 3 switches on the left hand side of the column. Can someone please identify them? I think wiper is in the middle, but no clue the other two.

There's been a disc brake conversion already done to the truck but without a booster, any suggestion for a booster?

Steering is sloppy. Tried tightening up the steering box, no good. Anyone running power steering? Come off a newwer late 60's, early 70's truck? Any suggestions?

What motors are you guys swapping? Best fit/performance without having to re-engineer the truck.

Re: New Truck - Picked it up Saturday

Nice truck! Welcome to the forum. I also have a 65 Stepper. Check out the FAQ section for these trucks. The 2nd post has the links for all sorts of great info and DIY. A SBC engine like a 350 will drop right in and uses the same motor monts and perches as your 230. Tranny and bell can stay the same. The wiper switch is in the middle left. The left is lights and the right is choke cable.
We love pics and there are a bunch of 65 builds in the build thread section.
Have fun and keep that 230 alive. I hear they are great engines.

Re: New Truck - Picked it up Saturday

Thanks for the reply guys. Lugnutz your doing some serious work to that truck. I'm not going to go that crazy with this one. This is going to be a fun truck to me. Flat black body, nice wheels and tires, and worked innards. Something fast and loud. The first of my hopefully future collection.

Now I'm saying that now. I said that about a 68 Firebird I had to and it ended up winning a bunch of shows so who knows haha.

Re: New Truck - Picked it up Saturday

Well, Ill try...

Far left is headlight switch, then the wiper switch, then the manual choke.

Contact Cptn Fab here and get a disk brake mount, then go to the WY and get one off a 73-87 half ton truck of your liking.

Steering could be anything, you may need to look further and get pix for the answer

I put an LS motor in mine because i wanted reliability and fuel mileage.

Re: New Truck - Picked it up Saturday

I put a carb and intake on it. I used the stock 4 speed. All the mounts line up fine.

Re: New Truck - Picked it up Saturday

Congrats on your new purchase. It looks like a nice straight truck. I like your ideas, they're pretty close to how I built mine - 350, Super T10 4 speed, Dana 4.10 rear gears. Makes for a very fun ride. Good luck and as mentioned take and post lots of photos.

Welcome to the forum!

Re: New Truck - Picked it up Saturday

Thanks guys. Worked on the wiring tonight, got the dash to light up. Working on the headlights now.

Once the headlights work, I'm going to work on putting 70's style taillights on it so I have reverse lights or I may rip off the big back bumper, make a roll pan and throw the taillights in there. Well see.

I love the idea of an LS. Might be able to find a wrecked vette or something and throw her in.

Re: New Truck - Picked it up Saturday

Hey guys, getting deeper into the project now. Have a question, anyone have a picture of where the steering column goes through the firewall on the engine side?

An exhaust clamp is the only freggin thing holding the steering column in place from the metal bracket coming off the firewall. Is there supposed to be more brackets inside and out that are missing? I tried searching the forums but didn't find much info out there.

Also I plan on putting in power steering, should I just scrap it all anyway? Find a new column, pump, etc etc and it will come with brackets?

Re: New Truck - Picked it up Saturday

there should be a bracket inside, one between the dash and column and another one that bolts to that, has the parking brake handle and mechanism attached to it. under the hood, there is a weird bracket that has a clamp that holds the column also.
