SBC Water pump Pulley Problem
In building a 350 SBC for my '63 GMC I've run into a problem. There were no pulleys with this engine when I bought it. It needs a 7" dia. pulley for a short water pump with a wide bolt pattern on the flange. So far all the pulleys that I've found are for the narrow bolt pattern flange and the only pulleys that have the wide bolt pattern are for long water pumps.
Can anyone tell me if the pulley that I need has ever been made and where one could be found? Thanks in advance. |

might be easier to get a water pump that has the dual bolt pattern like this one at O'reily's Murray brand part number CP898 |

Re: SBC Water pump Pulley Problem
^^^Definitely. Sometimes, finding the right pulley combinations can be like finding a needle in a haystack. Swapping out the water pump is by far the easiest way to solve your issue. It's cheap, and you'll have a fresh water pump, and that's never a bad thing.

Re: SBC Water pump Pulley Problem
The pump that is on the engine now is new from Advance Auto with the dual bolt pattern. The problem going with the small bolt pattern becomes finding a 1 1/2" spacer and a fan both with the small bolt pattern. One posibility may be drilling the pulley that I have to match the the dual pattern pump flange.

Re: SBC Water pump Pulley Problem
I believe the stock spacer and 4 blade fan from an I6 is the small bolt pattern.

Hayden part number 3969 $12.99 @ O'Reilly's, then all you need is a universal fan |

Re: SBC Water pump Pulley Problem
To save time I laid out the large pattern drilling points on the pulley that was on hand. Proceeded with drilling and ended up with a dual pattern pulley. Everything went together just fine.
If there is a next time I think I'll use the Hayden spacer and Flexalite fan that tincan1966 pointed out. |
