How do I find out what tranny I have?

Ok so I just got the truck today. '69 LWB, 6 cyl with aftermarket a/c. The truck runs, but it doesn't shift into gear. It's the column shifter, and I'd love to convert to a floor or cable shifter, but I can't figure out what tranny I have. Where can I look for identifying marks?

Also does anyone have a tranny for this truck preferrably in Az? Thanks.

if you look on the pan at the shape of the gasket then look in a haynes or chiltons manual youll be able to identify it

Th 350's have a relatively square pan and I think have the modulator on the driver side. Th 400's have a pan that looks like a squashed state of Texas and the modulator is on the passenger side.
Also, I have a TH350 I had rebuilt for my hotrod but now I have a flathead V-8 and a manual tranny for it and would love to sell it. If you are interested PM me. I am at about 7st and carefree hwy.

Well here's the thing;

I've had 2 700R4's and they both had a central mount towards the rear of the truck. This tranny has the same mount, but its not hooked up. Instead its hooked up at the two side mounts up by the bellhousing.

Also, it has 2 different shifter pieces. There are 2 rods for the linkage is what I guess I mean to say, and so that's odd too.

Also I can't get a nuts on measurement, b/c it's kinda difficult to measure underneath the truck.

Ok how about this.

No pan.

I swear to god, it has no tranny pan on it at all. It's appx 28 or so inches long, mounts closer to the bellhousing... and has 2 linkages going to it. It's a SIX cylinder also. Auto.

Two linkages
no pan
mounts under the bellhousing
clutch
three-on-the-tree

Yeah....uh....you got a standard tranny there. Hope you didn't pay more to get an auto tranny.

It won't go into gear huh? Typical worn out column shift linkage I'm sure. They always do that.

Now, I've seen the light!

kdubaz, you didn't know that some manual trannys were shifted on the column did you? Not all column shifters are auto trannys!

Lol. You're right. I had NO idea. Man do I feel like a capital DF now.

Anywho, it won't be a big deal once I put in the 305 with 700R4, but for the moment... What can I do. Any suggestions?

Get some old timer to teach you how to shift a three on the column.

I think I need to take up drinking. I'm so old I know what a three-on-tree is and how to drive one. I'm a dinosaur.

If'n you want maybe we can get together and help you troubleshoot your manual tranny. give me a pm or an e-mail if you are interested. I have had plenty of manual trannys, in fact I learned to drive in a '64 chevy 1/2 ton with a three on the tree.
