Old School Work Truck Look
I've had my '92 since new. It's worked hard all it's life. It was a modern truck back then, yet I ordered it as close to what my '72 Cheyenne Super Custom Camper K/20 I had at the time. The tradition Fleet color helped tie it to GM truck heritage as well. I always toy with anything I drive, but I let GMC do all the work on this one and have left it alone...except when the cap went on back in '07 I installed the visor (bought when truck was new). I finally did that because, first of all,I tried selling it and no one seemed to want it,and second because the truck was getting old,I figured I'd only run it a little while longer, and it would look ok with the steel work cap which committed it to being a true work truck. What's one accessory to lend to the old work truck a man takes pride in,I figured. It's a diesel with cab lights and big mirrors. A little more subtle than running a stack, right? I feel it enhances the top body line created by the addition of the cap. Anyway,I looked many times at this truck and considered what it would look like with earlier wheels and hubcaps...the way all trucks came traditionally. I'd always decide to leave it be as it came from factory...looked just fine. The last set of tires I bought in '08 I figured would be the last. Well, here it is '13 with winter around the bend and those tires not quite good enough for that. So,I took the 7" Ford wheels I had, sandblasted, primed, and painted rallye wheel silver. I ordered 255/85 Cooper Discovery STs,mounted them up,and popped a set of N.O.S. GMC caps I had for a tradition work truck look. I feel it is totally custom, even unique, yet looks like it could be factory. That's the type of thing I like to do to my stuff. Before the term was stolen for green marketing new vehicles,I called them "Hybrids"...using factory stuff that didn't come on it,like rallyes on a 67-72
So,now that you've read my book (heh heh),here's my new truck. No big deal, but I like it. First one is how it was before:

Re: Old School Work Truck Look
Looks more like what it is,I guess. It's a truck guy's truck. Trucks have many purposes, which is what makes them so cool. There's trucks I'd do this to but not that and there's trucks I'd do that to but not this. What makes them cooler is doing things that make them more what they are. I considered putting the center caps and beauty rings back on. The wider wheels would be a real minor change. But I always wondered what "going back" would look like. And,considering it's veteran status,I like the dressed down look. It's got comfy SLE bucket interior with the 5spd,so it's a combination of grunt and comfort. I did some front brake work this weekend, too, and discovered bad ball joint and idler arm...which I couldn't find on the weekend. So,ordering upper control arm assemblies and idler arm to keep her straight for another go-round. This will be the 5th (IIRC) idler arm,but till now (288k) nothing else has been replaced. Those bolts holding the hub to the knuckle were real S.O.B.s. Put a breaker bar to it,broke that and the socket, removed the knuckle, put a 3/4" drive impact to it (and heat),broke the impact socket. Three broken (quality) tools was enough to convince me it was winning!
