38 XML with lift
I hope I'm putting this in the correct spot. However, I am adding a lift kit to my 72 truck and I'm wanting to use the Michelin 38 xml tires. However, I am not sure what size lift I need. Skyjacker says a 6" lift will work, however, superlift I believe is a 10" lift...If anyone has a picture of some 67-72 trucks with xml tires please post them and provide the lift!
Thanks! |

Re: 38 XML with lift
I am sure 6" is not enough. With these trucks is pretty much goes like this:
4"...33" max. 6"...35" max. 8"...37"-38" max. (38s will me marginal) That said,it depends on how twisty the truck will be getting. Just running around on the road, general trail exploring, running through mud, etc. you can cut it closer. The width of wheel makes a big difference with 12.50 wide tires (6" vs 10") and so does side lug design or type of tread...such as an A/T with narrower tread base. I have a 6" lift,12.50/37 Super Swamper SSRs,and 8.25" wheels I'm going to try on my '72 K2500. I won't be out ripping it up. That will be cutting it close. I'm prepared to accept I may need zero-rates up front. I had a '71 Blazer with 7" lift,13/37 Super Swamper TSLs that I wheeled hard and never gave tire clearance a thought. Sorry,no actual experience with the set-up you want, but I think my info should help paint the picture of what your getting into

Re: 38 XML with lift
Thanks everyone...to answer Andrew-I'm running a Dana 60 up front and a 14 bolt. I'm leaning toward the 8 inch lift but trying to get the stance right. Ill keep doing research. I like to do things once if I can.

Re: 38 XML with lift
Yeah your good on axles,I have to ask sometimes because i have seen people try to run bigger tires then they can and break stuff left and right.

Re: 38 XML with lift
Yeah I'm going with those because I have a 12v cummins to put in it. I lean on the overkill side. I try to do things once if possible.

Re: 38 XML with lift
Not real sure how much lift mine has since it started as a 2wd. I would guess a max of 4 inches. Here's a picture of when I put my 38's on while I was having my other wheels powder coated that I run with my 44's. Setting like it is it will clear 44's all around and it flexes pretty well.
![]() Lift all depends on if your willing to trim some fenders. Here's proof that it clears 44's. ![]() |

Re: 38 XML with lift
Yep,trimming away what you're concerned about clearing eliminates the problem for sure

Re: 38 XML with lift
Ha yeah awesome trail rig but I'm trying to avoid trimming. Andrew I may have to check into that. I knew about the weight and I know there are others on this site who've used the off the shelf(skyjacker, superlift) lifts and been fine. However if the price isn't that much different custom ones would be better. Thanks for the responses. This is why I love this site.

Re: 38 XML with lift
Are you talking about an 11x16 michelin? Those are very narrow and you won't need 10 inches of lift, especially if you are running normal rims. These pictures are with 4" lift, but it would have needed a tiny bit trimmed from the lower front edge of the front fender. Ten inches of lift and it will look like it is on stilts. Go with 6 inches.

Re: 38 XML with lift
Awesome barraza I think that's the wheel. It's the 325/85r16 but I thought they were closer to 13 wide not 11. I could be wrong. Nice truck by the way!

Re: 38 XML with lift
I have done a ton of reading on cummins swaps ford and gm.Have you been to http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/forum.php if not its full of info and builds. Most 73-87 builds i read on there they had custom front springs made for the cummins swap.

Re: 38 XML with lift
Deaver isn't the only spring shop in the world, just the one all the internet and magazines expose people to. Everyone has a spring shop capable of building whatever you want fairly close by. The shop I use is about 40 miles away. They take good care of my needs. They've been into 4wds forever and will do whatever you want. Springs are steel, not magic
