70 c10 w/71 front suspension?

I need help from the experts on this site in identifying the suspension on my 70 c10. I believe it's '71? I'm leaning towards CPP's Grand Slam Kit & want to make sure everything will work on my frame.
Thanks in advance.

Re: 70 c10 w/71 front suspension?

Hard to tell in this one picture.

Where are the hardlines and rubber brake hoses connected?
(In front or behind the crossmember?)

A-arms are definitely 67-72.
Better pics of the spindles?

Re: 70 c10 w/71 front suspension?

Only way to know for sure to to verify the spindle.
The upper balljoint and outer tie rod will be either a 71-72 or 73-87.
Pull the spindle and take it to your local auto parts store.
Verify what fits.

Rotors should be 1-1/4" wide.

Rotors are 1-1/4. Looks like they are located behind.

That means the crossmember is the original 67-70 style.

Most likely they just changed:
1) everything from the a-arms out
2) balljoints and spindles out (including the steering)
You still don't know for sure what year the spindles are.

Which doesn't matter if you are changing everything.
Buy 71-72 spindles and match EVERYTHING to them,...
or use 73-87 spindles and match EVERYTHING to them.

Re: 70 c10 w/71 front suspension?

If i use my stock 67-72 a-arms, the cpp grand slam kit should bolt right up?
Also, who's the member on here that everybody buys cpp parts from?

Re: 70 c10 w/71 front suspension?

Contact Justin at Scottshotrods as he can supply CPP components without all the headaches when you buy from CPP according to info on this forum.
I'm sure others will offer some opinions from their experiences.

They have all the individual components.
DO NOT,... I repeat DO NOT buy that stupid CPP kit that converts everything to 73-87 spindles.
That is such a waste for the 60-72 trucks.
Why change balljoints and tie rods if you don't have to?

Buy the correct spindle for your truck!
60-62
63-70
71-72
Simple.

Here's a discription of the 60-66 kit:

Grand Slam Complete Suspension Kit w/ Front Disc Brake Conversion - 63-66 Chevy PU
This kit includes stock or 2.5" dropped front spindles, bearings, loaded calipers, 12" rotors, brake hoses, master cylinder, power booster, proportioning valve, four gas shocks, four lowered coil springs, inner and outer tie rod ends, custom adjusting sleeves, upper and lower ball joints, seals, spindle nuts, dust shields and dust caps. All necessary hardware is included. Select how much you want to drop the truck, and we'll send you the right coil springs to make it happen. Disc Brakes require at a least a 15" wheel and may not work with some factory drum brake wheels.

Factory 6-lug applications have 7/16" dia. studs and 5 on 5-lug kits have 1/2" dia. studs.

Notice it has you changing balljoints and tie rods?
Why?
Because you are now using 73-87 spindles.
Must be more mark-up on 73-87 parts.

Re: 70 c10 w/71 front suspension?

Personally,... (again, just my opinion),... I would buy the correct year drop spindle, drop springs, and drop shocks from wherever (Summit, ECE, McGaughy's, Western Chassis) then buy your 5 lug rotors, calipers, bearings from your local Auto Parts store.
Use a 71-72 M/C.
I DO however like to use aftermarket aluminum M/C now along with an disc/drum prop valve OR,... an adjustable prop valve.
ECE sells conversion brake lines along with companies like Performance Online.

Back on subject,... shop around at Summit racing.
They have a complete line of CPP products.

Re: 70 c10 w/71 front suspension?

Summit should have it all.
Take your CPP part number to Summit Racing's website.

Again,... that is where I shop.
Some board Vendors may match or beat their price.
I just wanted to tell all the members to shop around for the best price and the best customer service!

Sorry 70c10stepper, just need to ask the resident expert about this.

But if I wanted to convert my 6-lug front suspension drum brakes to a drop spindle and disc brakes I would want what?

I would say,... the same stuff that the 5-lug guys are running.
The only exception is you use an aftermarket 6-lug rotor.
I got my 6-lug rotors on my red '69 from Early Classic Enterprises.
They work perfect with an HD drop spindle (designed for 1.25" width rotors).
