Re: winch / power cut off switch ??
Solenoid is a good idea, but don't use the $20 version, they are probably not rated for that current and duration. They make solenoids for that type of application, try looking under wrecker or winch components. But the winch should have a build in solenoid, is your real issue the short protection? They make some BIG circuit protectors nowdays, but remember the starting line draw on the winch with a load is going to be big. Find out its inrush and stall current and go with something slow blow.

Re: winch / power cut off switch ??
just get a big prick night switch. make sure its CONSTANT DUTY! I think I'm running a 200 or a 250 A on my 8500# winch. solenoids are great and all but out here in the wet and rain they have a habit of seizing up if not used enough.
You could also go for the solenoid option, but don't be surprised to be dropping over $100 for what you need

Summit makes a heavy duty battery cable shutoff switch. I use them on my dirt track cars.

Re: winch / power cut off switch ??
I bought these....and unhook the cables when I'm not winching. No chance of a short, and takes me about 3 seconds to hook a cable up.
CHEAP too. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Everstart-...ndingMethod=rr |
