3-speed manual issues
My 71 has a 3 on the tree. It shifts very well except it will not go into first gear while moving. I have to come to a complete stop. Obvious cause would be a bad syncro - but it doesn't grind or anything. It just will not go into first. I have adjusted the linkage but to no avail.
Am I looking at a syncro issue? How is that fixed? |

Have you tried double clutching it?
If not a synchro could be a worn shift fork inside the tranny. |

It's neither.The 3 speed in these trucks was not a synchronized low.There is no synchro and it must be at a complete stop to shift into first.

My understanding that in 71 the 3-speed manual was a Saginaw and they were fully synchronized. This truck has a 350 in it and my father in law has owned it since new. He swears it would shift into first while moving.
Shift fork sounds like - it feels almost like it is jamming up. |

It's been years since I've driven my 3 speed on the column but I recall it needing to be stopped to go into 1st ("low") gear.
We are actually dealing with some pretty antiquated technology.....we are something of archeologists in a way. My dad has talked about the "double clutch." There is a hot girl on youtube that demonstrates it. :-) |

Sounds like a worn shift fork. I went through two 3 speed boxes on my first car ('60 Chevy Impala convertible), then my uncle, the Chevy wizard, showed me why and how it happened and how to correct it. Also, a gentle but firm hand on the lever works wonders.

Loose/worn linkages can also make it hard to get into gear. If they're loose the alignments are out of whack when trying to shift.
In my previous truck I always found it was harder to get into first when things started getting loose, then 2nd and 3rd would become more difficult as time went on - but it always started with 1st. Once it was sorted it shifted a smooth as silk. |
