engine removal
It will be six to eight weeks before i get my K1500 as its in transit to me here in the uk.
I have a new 383 built here and i am contemplating putting in the truck instead of the 350 it has, Whats involved in removing the engine, can it be done with the bonnet (Hood) off or do i need to remove the cab. What is the easiest way to go about it. I have no problem either way , but what way would you guys do it. And how easy is it to remove the cab complete? |

I would pull hood and radiator. Then the engine and transmission will come out as a unit.

Just went through this. Take off hood, radiator and undo fuel and power. I left tranny in as I wasn't going to work on it, so unbolted from tranny and mounts, then hoisted. Super easy. Going back in was a doddle too. I used a couple of studs in the tranny housing to line things up. Did it all without any extra hands.

if you want to detail the engine compartment you can pull the front clip in one piece but its not needed

Having done this like a lot of the other guys.....I would just remove the hood and the radiator.
If you start pulling fenders and grillls, etc you are going to find yourself into re-alignment and fender/panel 'gap' problems when you re-install this stuff. It will all go a little easier if you use a good hoist with a tiltable connection and if you have a good flat shop floor to work around and on. (Note: Be very careful with unbolting and then 'tieing' back the air conditioning unit so that it is out of the way. Or you are going to be rebuilding and recharging it which will be extra cost and work)  My two bits. Coley

thank you guys , certainly the engine will be going in , and i may as well, reseal the autobox.
its a good point on the air con, i will see if it works when it arrives. |

Motor and tranny won't come out together unless you unbolt the transfer case. Best to leave the tranny in there.

Hey mate, I've just pulled the engine and box in one go, and that's in a U.K sized garage??. You'll know what I mean. I took the bonnet, core support, grille off, left the wings and bumper in place. Just put the the engine and box back in today, it took a couple of hrs as it was down to two of us with an engine cr ne and a minimal tool box but it can be done. Where in UK are you???
