Power Steering Hose Connections
Hello,
I have a 72 Cheyenne 1/2 ton I am restoring (350 w/ TH400). The flare fitting on the power steering return line to the steering gear won't seal. I have a brand new OEM line with good threads. When the tubing nut is tightened all the way down to the last thread, there is still an 1/8" of play in the steel tube...the flare does not seat. From what I can view of the steering gear connection, it doesn't appear to have a flare fitting seat...it looks more like an o-ring seat. Does anybody know if some of the later model steering gears used an o-ring seal on the power steering hoses? The previous owner had many later model parts on this truck and I'm wondering if this may be a later model steering gear. There are a couple of casting numbers on the steering gear; 7802644 & 5686815. Any way to reference those to determine what years this gear was used in? Any other thoughts? does the female threaded part of the gear box have a taper seat?? inside...
sounds to me like the male threaded part of the hose don't go in far enough...if it's tight and the metal hose still is loose... try a o-ring inside ...if it's the return side it's low pressure anyway |

a lot of gm power steering systems used the o-ring seal its a good possibility there should be one there and you dont have it in there

Taper seats and o-ring seats are two different hoses. You have got the late model box. If you are using the early pump and late box you will have to change the pressue fitting in pump or take the new hose to a hose shop and have them put the right end on it.

I just had this happen to me. The 1977 and later boxes look identical, but they use O-ring fittings on the hoses. There was no adapter I could find, so I had to find another steering box or have custom hoses made. I went with the steering box for about $45 instead of odd ball hoses. Live and learn.

When I got mine the first one seemed to be missing a fitting, just a deep threaded hole. I took it back and had them pull a few more, same part #. Found one with a male fitting in place. Well, I needed a female fitting for my hose(male). I added a brass fitting (basically an extra long nut) which then made it a female fitting. Hasn't leaked a drop.
Confused yet?

Thanks for the replies. After further investigation, I'm fairly certain this steering box takes the o-ring type of hose connections. Although I'm unable to positively identify the year of the gear, I did find a hydraulic hose shop who has ordered the correct fittings (we hope) and can make custom hoses for me. I'll let you know how it works out.

I had pretty close tot he same issue on mine, I had to change out the pump, to a new one, and then i got a good seal, It was a Bad pump on the one i got. Might want to check that

Hey, SEVEND2, my old boss has a ranch in Wildomar....used to be called Lake Elsinore. Worked for him in Ontario, Calif. We'll see how the 'custom' hoses work out. Larry

on the back of the pump you can change the fitting type. the large hex base that the hose screws into can be taken out to change to the one you have. just go to a junk yard and take the one out that you need. clean it up and there you go. that way you dont have to go back to the parts house and go through thier inventory to find the right one. its not that bad.
