Got the fork portion of the rotisserie welded up today before the downpour. Works great, surprisingly stable. We'll be removing the access length of sqare tubing behind the mast.
The only down fall, you cannot pick up the cab from off of the ground. Tomorrow we'll start work on the cab attachments. Picture a cross that clamps to the pinchwelds surrounding the door opening, with a pipe coming out of it. I would like this attachment to be as flat as possible interior side, to be able to paper off the door openings when painting the exterior, yet not to protrude to much at the pinch welds to allow detail work and paint. The rotisserie can pick up the cab from the back or the front, whichever proves to ease the work at hand.

So were almost there, Static balancing point, it stays in position on it's own. Notice the unobstructed workspace available. In this position you can remove the bottom clamp for rocker panel installation, though you will not have your door on for fitment check, as pointed out by Captainfab. The clamp can act as a reference point for inner rocker and outer rocker height.
No need for a pipe to go through the cab, though if your cab is that weak, you can slip a 1 1/2" pipe through the 2" pipe. So as Fred T mentioned, first you install the Safety Posts, then you can walk into the cab through the Windshield or Big Back Window in this case, while rotating the cab to do under dash work or to sand and paint the interior. The cross is flat on the inside except for the clamping area, should be able to paper off the interior quite easily. Stupid height, but wanted to see how high it could go. Dad's 5'8" so it goes pretty high. Indexing head no locking pin yet, but that's coming. Have to put a pin on both arms because you can grab the cab from the front or the back, therefore the indexing head switches sides. Simply clamps to the cab. There's a hook on the plate that is inside the cab, then an flat plate that butts up against the folded sheet metal edge, then the 3rd. removable pressure plate that clamps the assembly together. Safety First Plan on making a pair of extend-able, removable posts, that insert into the black pipe, these will stop the cab from falling, if the hydraulic cylinder fails, while I'm working on or inside the cab.

The more I look at it the more I like your design. There are definitely advantages to this design versus the traditional rotissorie. Looks like it will work on the '60-'63 cab also. One advantage I can see is working on the interior roof in a below position instaed of an overhead position. The height adjustment and moveability of the engine hoist is a plus also. Good job. Let us know how it works

I like to see that safety is at the front, always good to try to figure out what can go wrong, and then plan for it.

Off the engine hoist and onto adjustable legs. This way you can pull the frame out from under the cab whille in storage. It also fit into the trailer for transport to the blasters.
Next step a simulated frame cradle for rocker installation similar to LostMy65 concept.

The owner of the International that I'm restoring brought the cab over already on the rotisserie. IIRC, he got it on sale at Northern Tool for around $750 bucks. Its built pretty stout and has a gearbox to rotate the cab that also locks in place once you've got it turned where you want it. Has hydraulic jacks to lift/lower the cab and is also adjustable for center of gravity. Pretty neat roisserie at a good price.

There are some great ideas and slick setups in the previous posts.
I used to use a chain hoist and a wide web strap that is intended for 4x4 guys to put around a tree to winch themselves out when they get stuck. That was when I had access to a chain host that was about ten feet off the ground and could lift a cab off a lifted 4x4 if needed. Most guys have access to a cherry picker and it wouldn't be hard to make a setup with a 4x4, pair of 2x6's fastened to gether or even a piece of steel tubing that was setup to fasten to the bolt that normally holds the chain on the cherry picker. The only problem with that is that you have to be able to roll the cherry picker back away from the frame, or pick the frame up with floor jacks and pull it out from under the cab. I used this setup to swap roofs from one van to another a few years ago. Off the old van Sitting on the other van. I lifted one of my cabs off my trailer with it a couple of months ago but didn't get a photo. The only issue here is height and the fact that you have to be able to roll the frame out from under it. |

The local powdercoater next door has a Chevelle body that has been powder-primered beforeany body/rust repair.
At first I thought this was ridiculous, but after a long talk with him, realize this is the way to go. The initial blasting removes all the rot back to workable material .... The primer-coating seals every nook and cranny, and leaves a tuff surface that filler will adhere too with easy. You grind back the areas that need fab/welding work, then when done, repowder the areas, and reheat. He will give me a great deal on blasting the entire body of the Burban, but I am hesitant because: 1) That would mean a full build 2) There wouldn't be much left of the body Sorry to get off track, but the mention of powdercoating got my attention. As far as cab rotisserie, I too would make my attachment points frt to back and along the underside. With the use of 'stand-offs' and long fasteners to give you some room to work, and to allow the blasting to get almost all the area.
