Quality of Reproduction Steering Wheels

I have not seen one in person but have heard they perhaps are not of the highest quality? Wondering if I am better off buying an original that needs work and restoring it. Having trouble finding much for a reasonable price.

Thanks!

Re: Quality of Reproduction Steering Wheels

I bought one of the repops. Total piece of crap! It feels (and weighs) like it has no steel frame under the plastic. If I used it to help pull myself up into the truck, I seriously worried about it breaking. Have since replaced that with a Grant steering wheel http://www.ebay.com/itm/1960-1969-GM...p2047675.l2557

Even though I would prefer a stock wheel, I actually like the smaller diameter a lot.

IMHO, if you are able to find and restore an old one, you'd be way better off than throwing your money away on a repop.

I would get a used one and restore it. But... I would buy a 67/68 steering wheel. The 69-72 wheels crack way too easily. You could get one and restore it, only to have it crack like crazy on you again. I went with a 67/68 wheel, and I'm very pleased

Steering column shows the true color. Disregard the black wheel wrap and electrical tape.

Re: Quality of Reproduction Steering Wheels

I've got an original 69-72 wheel available in the parts board if you want to try your hand at restoration.

Re: Quality of Reproduction Steering Wheels

Repops suck. No inner steel ring. Mine deflects up to an inch when I push on the top center. Recommend restore a real one. A nice real one is more than worth the usual cost - ie normally around $200+

Re: Quality of Reproduction Steering Wheels

I just missed out on one on eBay for $45. Oh well, I'll keep looking. Fella up the road said he had 12 trucks but they were all too far gone as far as steering wheels.

Re: Quality of Reproduction Steering Wheels

I have an original (very) nice, non-cracked black one that I'm going to post up for sale soon...however, it is black....oh well, no harm in trying. It would have been posted up now if I had been able to figure out how to decrease the size of the pics....still working on that
all Good

Re: Quality of Reproduction Steering Wheels

interesting, I find the large diameter of the orig to be a pain.

Re: Quality of Reproduction Steering Wheels

Mine is all original and only driven for enjoyment 1-2 times a week so the big wheel works fine for me.

Ok Harry, I'll get some of those pics sent out to you later today.
If interested, we can check into the shipping bit....not really too much of a problem.
