69 c10 starting problems

I have 69 c10 with a factory 350. When I turn to key it sometimes clicks. Only one click and does not engage. Other times it starts right away. The battery and starter are new. The battery cables are new but the ground is bolted to a bolt that is extended thru the alt blanket that has a nut on it then a washer ,then the ground from the battery and another nut holding the cable on. Is this the best way to attach the ground

Any ideas why this is happening?

Thanks

Sounds like a loose connection point. I would reroute my grounds to the frame. Problems should be solved.

Grounds, then neutral safety switch (if its column shift automatic).

Re: 69 c10 starting problems

That 'click then nothing' noise can be a loose or bad connection at either the battery, the starter lug for the positive cable, or the engine block ground for the negative.

There should be a spot on the bottom front of the engine block to attach a 3/8" bolt for the battery ground. You should also have at least one ground strap running to the cab, and one to the frame from the engine to make sure all the metal parts of the truck are grounded.

If all those turn out to be good solid and clean, then you may have a bad starter solenoid that isn't engaging completely or is broken internally, not allowing current to flow into the starter.

Good Luck!

Still had the click today. Hit the starter with a mallet twice and she now starts up

Back to the same problems. Turn the key and it clicks. Thoughts ?

that sounds like a starter brush not making good contact all the time or a solenoid making a bad connection internally.
