Does anyone have any suggestions on removing a VERY stubborn oil filter?

long screwdriver and hammer, beat it through and turn, it'll eventually stop ripping and actually come off (i had to do this on the 74)

I'll asume you have tried the proper sized filter wrench already.
I've had to shove a large screwdriver through the body of more than one filter in the past, but sometimes that eill just cut the filter in two.
When that happens, it is hammer and chissel time.

Coating the seal on the filter with oil before instalation helps prevent this from happening.

I may have to try that screwdriver but before I do I am going to try 2-3 strips of duct tape for some extra traction. When I put the filter on I coated the seal. This is the first oil filter to do this to me.

Thanks Guys once it stops raining for a bit I will give that a try if the tape doesnt work.

I use silicone o-ring lube on EVERY oil filter I put on. I've done the screwdriver thing too, messy but usually works. Big channel locks, warm the motor up first, kitchen gripper thingys, hammer and chisel and tap on the upper flange in the off direction. tapping with a hammer from different directions to loosen up the flange, strap wrench, pipe wrench. If one of those don't work you are up a creek. If it doesn't come off and its a '67 I'll come take it off your hands for free since it will be junk with a wholed filter on it.

Another way to gain a little more leverage or more handle room is to use a belt.I've done it several times when I couldn't find my filter wrench.Pants sagged a little but got the filter off!!

I read about a guy in Chevy High Perf. who had the same problem. He destroyed the filter getting it off of the motor ( screwdrivers & the like) - turned out that one of the transmission bolts was too long & butted up against the filter. I guess he put the filter on before bolting it to the transmission. Is this a new motor or tranny? Just a suggestion....

Yep its a new motor used the old tranny in the swap though. I didnt see any bolts touching it on the tranny side either.

Stop your worries
I have found the answer!
Needle nose Pliars and adjustable wrench will take out the ones that have been beeten to a pulp with only the ring left!

See if you can dig up one of these. They just grip tighter & tighter. It's a Lisle Model 22000 for standard diameter filters. I've never seen one fail, & it won't crush the filter.

I have had good luck with a sheet of sand paper folded so both your hand and filter had grip and go at it. Last resort big fat screw driver standard 1/4 inch tears the filter 2 quick and you windup with pieces.

i bought the filter wrench that looks like a big old channel lock plier and that has been a godsend with some of em.... the screwdriver trick only has ripped apart filters hammer and chisel works but sometimes ya wind uphitting something ya shouldnt and theres another kind fo filter removal tool that grabs the end of the oil filter gets into it and turns it

I don't have an oil filter wrench so what i do is improvise. i just found an old crappy belt for my jeans that i didn't wear anymore and wrapped it around the oil filter. That worked like a charm for me!!

do you have headers? do they come close to the filter? mine do and it is hard to get off.

The battle is over. Skokie 1 oil filter 0. The oil filter wrench that looks like a pair of channels locks did the trick. I ounched a hole in it at the very end but all in all it is off and there was no damage to the engine. I put on a new filter hand tight
