factory 4x4 drivetrain: Will '59 work in '60-66?
I just lucked into a '59 factory 4x4 front axle with locking hubs, cross member, trans, transfer case, transfer case cross member, rear axle and factory front wheels, for scrap price.
A local rod shop I know is converting a 4x4 to 2x4 for a customer, and they were going to haul it all off... it's already in the back of the truck ready to go to the scrapper, and I happened by there today! I've always wanted a factory 4x4. Mainly concerned about axle width, spring-pad mounting location, and whether it's the "right" T-case and trans for the later trucks. My preference is the '60-'63 trucks (wrap-around windshields--yes, I'm aware of the frame differences with '63), but this will be worth building a house around a door knob--I'll look for a '55-'59 if these parts won't fit the '60-'63. Anyone have the low-down on 'em? -Brad

Re: factory 4x4 drivetrain: Will '59 work in '60-66?
that would be a Napco setup if it was original in the 59. frames are different. you would be better off going to to the 73 - 87 stuff. the you would be able to have better brakes and steering and much more avail. doners are not that expensive
x frames are not that convenient to put transfer cases in ron that setup would be good for the 55-59 guys. if someone wanted the optional stuff. would be a shame to see it go to the scrapper. |

Re: factory 4x4 drivetrain: Will '59 work in '60-66?
Agreed about the x frame advice. That said, I installed a Spicer 24 out of a '57 Napco into my 77crew cab dually when I converted it to 4x4. On the '57 Napco that I had, one of the kingpins sheared off and I replaced the axle with one from an '87 3/4 ton Silverado. Sometimes it takes some modification but there is a lot of interchangeability. I do agree with the previous comments that the Napco guys would really like that stuff. Hell you could probably sell the drive train for enough money to get into an original 60-66 4x4 and save the hassle of the conversion too. My .02¢
