Truck Upgrade

Well my old motor finally gave up the ghost and other projects took priority. So my truck sat for almost two years.
But now it's better than ever. I put a 5.3 drivetrain from a 2008 GMC 1500 with 40,000 miles in it (never mind the engine cover). Plus I had a rack & pinion from No Limit installed as well. It's as close to a new truck as I'll ever get. I'm very happy!

Truck Upgrade2

couple more pics,
there's not much out there for engine covers. While not a 6.2, I liked the cover.

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Truck Upgrade

I wished I hadn't seen this thread, I have three trucks and about five of these motors laying around from 4.8's to 6.0's from trucks I've junked. Now the wheels are a churnin. Is the rack on this truck off of this body style truck as well that the kit uses?

Re: Truck Upgrade

I love the factory look to your engine compartment. I hope mine will look that clean when I finally get around to it.

What motor mounts and radiator did you use? What application are the radiator hoses from?

Re: Truck Upgrade

Hugger,
You can get the rack from Brothers or No Limit (same kit). Little over a grand when all said and done. Drives really nice.

What does the rack get u over a normal power steering setup if I may ask other than the cool factor!
I do like the fact of the cool part though for sure. Just wondering what the advantages were of it.

Re: Truck Upgrade

I went through several steering boxes; standard, quick ratio, variable... they all develop that old school slop; that 1/4in of nothing gradually grows to almost inch. You can tighten the box but if you do it too much it will lock up.
I found the "red top" brand, "variable ratio" to be the best box but I've always liked how rack and pinion feels. So when this came out I thought I'd give it a try.

Re: Truck Upgrade

According to the kit on BROTHERS a PS pump, brackets, and hoses are needed in addition to this setup. What did you use for these required parts? I have a 1972 style pump, brackets, and hoses on my 1968. Will my current parts work. My gear box always seems to leak and I have changed it twice but after a period of time it starts to leak again.

Detailed Description

Finally, a Rack & Pinion Power Steering System for your classic truck. BROTHERS 1967-72 Rack & Pinion Power Steering Conversion is awesome! Kit comes complete with: power rack & pinion unit, rack mounting kit, rack mounting hardware, billet rack clamp and hardware, steering support bearing and hardware, lower steering column shaft with u-joint (welded), as well as an outer tie rod kit. Note: drop spindles require 17" or larger wheels. Requires PS pump, brackets and hoses.

Re: Truck Upgrade

I had the work done but I think the only issues to come up were changing fittings to hook up to the power steering pump and we needed another joint in the column. Remember, I put in a 2008 engine. It was above my skill level and I bet a lift would be worthwhile. I think there are instructions on the No Limit site.
Drove it to work today (70miles round trip) and it was great. With new shocks and springs, going around corners at average speeds without a sway bar is hardly noticeable... I said "average".
