Gas tank filler neck seal/grommet dry rot?

When i got my truck, the grommet around the fill neck was dry rotted. I replaced it at the end of last summer and its now very dry rotted again? No fuel has been spilled on it, as i was very careful about that. Is there any way to preserve this longer than a year?

Edit: It is dry rotting from the fill neck out?

The material that is used in most rubber now days has no ozone protection and is prone to decay. Keeping your truck out of the sun will help but most exposed rubber does not last long.

The origonal grommets were made with better rubber and lasted longer. I am not sure if any of the gas tank grommets will last but someone may have run across a brand that lasts longer then what you are experiencing.

Wes at classicheartbeat has some orignal 67-70 chevrolet grommets and 5 yr guaranteed 71-72 grommets. Sounds alot better than some of the foreign stuff.

Grab an original from Wes and they will outlast the repo ones anyday. I purchased a cheap one from LMC and realized it was junk when the original bad one I was replacing was nicer. Lol.

I got a cheap grommet and it cracked in less than a year,

Also, noticed my new Made In Mexico Goodyear upper radiator hose seems a little dry and chalky.
I detail all the hoses with protectant, and that newer hose won't keep the shine like the rest.

Good prices but 16.90 for shipping less than 2 pounds? 2 small items.
Just saying, in the checkout there is no other option for shipping.

Shipping is what it is. The prices are calculated right strait from UPS website. If you are in New Jersey, you are clear accross the country from me and is why the shipping is so high. I am in Washington State. If you want to purchase one of our grommets just place in the notes that you would like me to ship Priority Mail. That charge is only $6.00. My shopping cart does not have that option so you will have to place in that into the notes. WES

Side Note: I have offered these grommets to all of the catolog companies so that they would have a quality part instead of the pile of crap they sell. To date they all choose the cheaper part.

Re: Gas tank filler neck seal/grommet dry rot?

Just put in an order with you Wes. Yes, $19.00 and some change was a little high for what I ordered, but if you stuff will not rot, that saves me money for what I would pay to replace the others. Thanks!

I bought mine from Classic Chevrolet in OKC and it is junk. I'm calling Wes when I get ready to replace it.

Re: Gas tank filler neck seal/grommet dry rot?

I also would highly recommend ordering a quality grommet. The one I recently bought lasted me 2 weeks before it had dry rotted worse than the one I just replaced! I learned my lesson quickly...

The division bar felt they sell is total garbage as well. It sheds like a cat in the summertime the first time you roll your window up or down. Absolutely worthless crap. The ones you and gmcpaul sell are WAY higher quality, and the felt does not shed at all.

Re: Gas tank filler neck seal/grommet dry rot?

Here's a way to put these prices in perspective..
Ask yourself if YOU could make the part for the price you're about to pay..
Chances are ..NO.

A few more dollars for a quality part, doesn't seem as high then.
