Buying a '68
I'm looking at buying a stock 1968 Chevrolet C-10 long bed but I have one question. The truck runs good and is drive able, the interior is not all torn up, it still has the original paint with only one dent on the fender and little to no rust. The price is $1800 but I noticed on the door jamb it has a metal tag from DMV and it as a assigned identification number. Does this detract from the value of the truck?
Thanks |

Re: Buying a '68
The DMV tag in the jamb indicates a rebuilt title. It was totaled and paid off by an insurance company at some point in it's life. Not surprising, as these trucks don't carry a lot of value to an insurance company as a farm truck or daily driver. It would definitely hurt the value in any resale situation down the road. For $1800, there's a lot to pick from, I'd keep looking..

Would it have a salvage title?

"I'm a 67-72 Chevaholic." Fact is, stopping drinking and whatever in 1981 probably saved my life. But if I didn't stop, and didn't start building stuff...and I didn't die...I'd probably be better off in the cash department...... ....No complaints from this corner, you understand.

Re: Buying a '68
not sure what plate you're referring to, but if it's got original paint it probably wasn't totalled. see how it drives. sounds like a decent deal to me... did you get any pics of the tag?

Re: Buying a '68
Looked at the truck again the tag is a replacement id tag from DMV. The vin is the same as the glove box decal and title. Another issue is the truck hasn't been registered since 2006 so it has over $750 in back fees

Re: Buying a '68
A "salvage" title is what is issued as soon as a truck is totaled/paid off by the insurance company. It can be for any reason, flood, fire, accident, hail damage, tree fell on it-whatever.
A "rebuilt" title is issued when a registered/approved rebuilder has repaired it and had it inspected by the state, who deemed it adequately repaired. In your case, if it indeed has 100% original paint, then it was flooded or stolen and recovered. It also could possibly have been a state-approved cab swap. To answer your original question- yes, in any of these scenarios the value of the truck is diminished.

Re: Buying a '68
It also could be someone removed and lost the original VIN tag and the state replaced it in an approved way. CA only has clear title and salvage title ( no rebuilt).

Re: Buying a '68
The truck has a clear title and after some negotiating I bought it. According the what I can make out the sticker in the glove box does indeed confirm the truck is Ivory/Gold, 327 V8, CST trim package, Automatic, Tinted windows, Heavy duty suspension. The vin on the replacement tag on the door jamb and on the glove box decal is CE148Z157633

Sounds like a 50th anniversary to me. Do you have a pic of the SPID(inside glovebox door decal/option sheet)?

Re: Buying a '68
If the VIN on this plate is the same as the original, then is it a reassigned title?? I thought a new VIN came with any reassigned title/VIN-plate whether it's salvage, rebuild,or whatever. I would buy it in a heartbeat. I sure don't find "plenty" of original paint little to no rust trucks for $1,800. If you planned to put big bucks into modifying it I don't see the new plate hurting it. I only see that hurting it as being 100% original.

Re: Buying a '68
i agree with special k, as long as there's no damage and the title is clean (at least will be after paying back fees) most guys won't care about the replacement tag.

The folks at CA DMV (my favorite Hell) told me that after five years CA vehicles "dropped off" their system. So, when you go to register them, it's like starting fresh......No back fees...none of that stuff. Maybe an inspection. But, mostly, not even that. Was I misinformed from the horse's mouth? Or, did this truck stay in the system because of something about the "replacement tag"? $750 in fees or not, you got a nice truck. Especially for the price.

You've got a lot to start with on this truck. Good deal IMO, tag wouldn't bother me either.

Re: Buying a '68
I rebuild wrecks in Arkansas and have since 1987. The trucks here only get a reassigned VIN tag if it is a stolen recovery or something along that vein. I have built hundreds of trucks with a salvage title since my state has put into effect the salvage title law, and if it were fair I would be all for it, but that is for another post another time. I have not had a truck with a state provided vin number ever I would tend to shy away from themas the same reason as anyone else would. So I just thought I would add that little tid bit not to inflame or trying to start anything with anyone just saying what happens in my state of AR. Jim

Re: Buying a '68
Is their any way to find out if the truck originally had "west coast" style mirrors or the round or square head type?

Re: Buying a '68
Yes, If your truck had optional mirrors, they will be listed on the SPID. Your SPID does not have optional mirrors listed, so your truck came with the standard mirrors. In 68 that was a 6 1/4 inch round head, fixed arm mirror. (RH&LH) Nice 50th BTW
