HELP me identify V8 in my 69 please.
Just bought a '69 c20. Originally came with 396, was told it has a 350(?) now.
Can't find anything online when entering numbers from the block, except one site that said it was a 283 from the late 50's...?!?! Any pro's out there that can help me figure this out, I'd really appreciate it. V073IDE Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: HELP me identify V8 in my 69 please.
Help us help you...how about finding the casting number off the block, normally it is on the back side of the block behind the driver side head...also while you are cleaning that area you may find the actual casting date...both of these can be found but you may have to spend a bit of time hunting for them...post the numbers once you find them or goggle them and I am sure you will find you answer.

Look here.
http://www.nastyz28.com/gm-chevy-cod...s-suffix-4.php If it's a 58 or 62 283 it will have a road draft tube beside the distributor as a telltale sign. |

DE could also be a *****in' 307!
Get the casting number off the back of the block like mentioned earlier. There will probably be a half inch of crud on top of it... so you'll need to scrape it off to see it. Gary

Just for starters, The V = Flint Plant, 07= July, 03 = 3rd date of the Month.
A fire cracker block I see....so far... |

OK...I am thinking its a 68 307 or a 58 283.....I do see a 8 (snowman) on that pad somewhere...

Re: HELP me identify V8 in my 69 please.
That '8' doesn't indicate year. THat first number is part of the serial number on the truck. However there should be a 3 digit code behind the pass head and the last digit indicates the year.

Maybe look like F 7 8....f =June maybe G=July 7=day 8=year (1968) which if we had the casting number we could put this all to bed...Good Night.

Re: HELP me identify V8 in my 69 please.
That is definitely an "I" between the 3 and the D, but I think that it was used in place of a 1 for some reason.......might have been at 4:55 on Friday.
I see what appears to be a power pack head, so my quess would be a 283. A '68 307 would have had heads with the accessory holes. Of course all of this is assuming the heads weren't changed at some point.

Re: HELP me identify V8 in my 69 please.
Kawtoom, where are you? Did you just post one post and leave?
By the way, welcome to the site. Do respond with more info. There's other numbers on the side of the block and maybe behind the drivers side head that will help identify this engine. I do know that in some GM engines, like Corvettes, the last few digits of vin number were stamped on the pad. I have one on an engine stand right now.
