Bed wood nuts

Does anyone know why GM used square-head nuts on the metal strips that secure the wood in the bed? What's the rationale?

Re: Bed wood nuts

All for assembly purposes. It is much easier for one person to go under the truck and tighten the nut rather than have someone on the top have to hold the bolt head with a wrench.

The problem is they are prone to twisting in the hole when they are rusty.

Re: Bed wood nuts

No, I think you misunderstand. Not the carriage-style square headed bolt on top. I'm talking about the little square nut on the bottom side. Why not use regular nuts under there?

Re: Bed wood nuts

Ok, I understand what you are saying now. I have not personally had to deal with that type but if I know GM like I do, It has to do with cost savings. They most likely got a better deal on square head nuts from the vendor.

Of course I do not know this for a fact and hope someone else has a good answer.

Re: Bed wood nuts

Seems I've seen square nuts under other wood-floored trailers I worked with back in the day. Wonder if there's a reason for them. Do they bite differently into flat washers or something? Hmmm.

Re: Bed wood nuts

Square nuts are cheaper to produce.
