Leak from speedometer cable

I've had a leaky New process MY6 or A833 since I got my 63. My guess is that must of come off of a 80's chevy truck. I got all the seals replaced but it was still leaking from the speedometer cable. The transmission shop said it just needs a new one because its suppose to have an O-ring in the cable. So I go to O'reily's and their cable is exactly the same as mine no O-ring. I completely forgot that I had taken the cable off but it stopped the leak! Does this seem right? I can live without the speedometer it wasn't accurate anyway. My question is are these particular cables suppose to have an O-ring? If so is it just a matter of getting a better one at NAPA?

Re: Leak from speedometer cable

There is no seal or o-ring in the cable. There is a small seal in the fitting that the pencil gear goes into. There should be no leakage difference with the cable on or off. The grease does accumulate in the bottom of the cable & leak while it is setting.
