Sm465 to a833 swap

After resorting to a twin stick for overdrive on my 87 4x4 my buddy told me he had the 6.2 deisle 4 speed in his shop. I held my breath thinking it couldn't be. But it was. $200 later she's mine. I got the transmition. My question. Is it a bolt on with my current 208 transfer case and sm465 bell housing and clutch assembly?

Re: Sm465 to a833 swap

There are a couple of threads on these in the archives, either here or in Drivetrain.

1. Assuming it is a 4wd trans, it will have a TH400 type output shaft. It should have a cast iron rear support rather than a conventional tailshaft support. Pretty easy to compare the bolt pattern at the case. If it's a 2wd trans, it has a th350 output shaft, and at least on my trans', 2wd and 4wd are different length shafts.
2. SOME A-833's come with Chevy bolt patterns on the front, and Chevy diameter bearing retainers. MOST A-833's have a larger front retainer that will not fit a standard Chevy bellhousing, and MOST have Chrysler mounting patterns at the bell. You'll have to check your specific parts. There does not seem to be an obvious break, although some suspiscion that later 2wd trans' are more likely to have Chevy compatibility.
3. You did get the factory Hurst shifter, right, because your shifter will not mount up. Also the 2wd and 4wd shifters are slightly different (although they may work, the shifter is positioned slightly different). I have heard the Dodge shifter can be reworked.
4. Clutch should be Chevy.
The best way to accomplish this is with the complete A-833, bell, and shifter. Bells come rod or hydro.

What were you using for OD in your truck before? Ranger or something similar?

Re: Sm465 to a833 swap

I had not bought the aux transmition yet. So I don't have an od yet. My buddy said he did some horse trading an wound up with this tranny. It's got the shifter on the top, the bell is with it, and its rumored to have been on a 6.2 Diesel. I haven't got it home yet to compare output and input shaftes, or bolt patterns on the bell.

Re: Sm465 to a833 swap

If that A833 was behind a 6.2 it should bolt up fine.I pulled one from a 85K10 with a 305 last year & put behind my 6.2 with no troubles. It's a nicer tranny to shift (short throws) than a 465 plus you get OD. One draw back is higher 1st gear, but if needed you can start out in low range too.I got reading your post again,if the shifter is on top it's not a A833.they are a side loader.

The shifter bolts to the top, but the gear cover is on the side.
It's great you got the bell and the shifter. Did you get the support too?

Re: Sm465 to a833 swap

No. I didn't get the support. But I'm thinking I could make the support for my sm465 fit. "Thinking" isn't a strong suite though

Re: Sm465 to a833 swap

keith's link is great. It shows the 2wd version.
The pattern and size of an SM465 support (what is the right name of that piece anywys?) are not likely to bolt up to the Mopar pattern on the end of the trans main case.
Rubble's right about the shifter location, the shifters bolt on the tail housing or adaptor, not on the main case.
I don't have a picture, the trans is buried in my parts shed. But the 4wd one has a 'cast iron' rail housing that bolts directly to the t-case, and has a tall stand off to reach down to the trans mount. It also has the larger TH400 output shaft so it was designed to go to a Tcase with that input. There 'may' be a TH350 shaft 4wd version, I don't speak 4wd so don't know (I bought it as a parts trans and to get the rod clutch bell housing, as my 2wd is a hydro bell). I do know the shafts are different size and length but I disremember which was longer.

Re: Sm465 to a833 swap

Thanks for the link Keith!! That helps a whole bunch,my 4wd version is quite a bit different than that, like D13 said...it's a tall cast piece.I will try to get a picture of it.
