Changing a flex plate
Tried this before but don't know if it posted.
Please tell me that the flex plate can be changed without separating the engine and tranny. I did it about 15 years ago, but this time, I'm trying to talk my son through it over the phone. He's in SC and I'm in Germany. After he took the three mounting bolts out the torque converter should slide back out of the way, right? |

No. It has to be separated. Even if you could get a tool up there to get the bolts out, you would never be able to get them tight enough after installation. The bolt heads for the flex plate are very thin and you need a good socket (6 point) to remove them without rounding them off. The whole job with removing the trans or sliding it back should not take more than 4 hrs for the average person with moderate tech skills.

A little trick that works is to replace the two lower trans bolts with longer bolts and just slide the trans back. Then you can get in there without dropping an lining it back up is a snap. I've done this a few times and it works
