wiring starter
I'm bolting my old I6 starter to a new 350. I have a new HEI distributor. New (original replacement) alternator.
Wires going to the starter are; + battery cable, purple, and and two yellows that come from a red. What do I use/change with the new HEI set up? |

The 2 yellow attach to the red which is the resistor wire from the ignition switch. You don't need any of them. Some people take the big plug apart at the firewall and replace the resistor wire with a 12 gauge and run it to the batt terminal on the distributor.
However pulling the firewall plug apart can create other problems. I just tape the red plus 2 yellows into the wire harness so no bare wire ends make contact and then run a new 12 gauge wire from an unfused tab on the fuse box. I keep the wires so if I should want to use the old points dizzy again the wires are still there. |

So, the starter gets the positive battery cable and the purple wire, that's all?

Yup!!
Purple to the 'S' terminal on the solenoid. Easier to remember it as the outside one. Another reason to tape the old wiring into the harness is I carried my old dizzy and coil in the glove box for a spare in case the hei crapped out. |

The outside one was marked "R", I put the purple wire on the one marked "S" on the inside.

I just cut the red wire before the two yellow splice and I noticed it has printed on the insulation, "resistance do not cut"
What's up with that? |
